8 Confirmed Dead, 26 Rescued As Three Storey Building Collapses In Satellite Town

Scene of the incident

Eight persons have been confirmed dead while 26 others were rescued alive yesterday after a three-storey building collapsed at Alakija, Old Ojo Road, near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Satellite Town, in Ori-Ade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), were deployed to the scene after the building collapsed at about 11:00 a.m.

Personnel from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station were immediately mobilised and arrived at the scene at 11:49 a.m.

The collapsed structure was a three-storey residential building occupied by several tenants at the time of the incident.

It also housed a number of businesses, including cyber cafés, a photo studio, phone repair shops, mobile network outlets, a bookshop and office spaces. Residents described it as one of the oldest buildings in the area, having stood for more than 30 years.

One eyewitness recounted how she narrowly escaped the disaster after attending a meeting elsewhere. She said she had planned to visit a phone shop in the building to exchange mobile phones but decided to attend the meeting instead.

According to her, she had considered leaving the meeting if it did not begin on time, unaware that the decision would save her life. She added that she had called another person who was inside the building to join the meeting, a move she believes also saved that individual, as the building collapsed less than 15 minutes after they left.

Witnesses said the phone shop was usually crowded with customers, raising fears that the number of casualties and trapped victims could be higher than initially reported.

It was learnt that a friend of one of the occupants had advised him to leave the building on Wednesday afternoon during a visit, but the occupant chose to remain.

A woman who lost her child in the incident was seen crying and blaming herself for waking the child to accompany her to the shop.

While relatives of the deceased wailed, other occupants were seen trying to salvage their belongings from the scene amid the chaos.

Speaking with The media, the Head of Operations, NEMA Lagos Territorial Office, Mohammed Olatunde, said: “The three-storey building came down after 11:00 a.m. The rain is making the rescue operation difficult.”

He added that 26 persons had been rescued, while eight bodies were recovered from the rubble.

Commenting on the likely cause of the collapse, he said: “The structural integrity of the building had been compromised. We learnt that the building had shown signs of imminent collapse for days, but the occupants remained inside. The collapse was bound to happen.”

The Director of Operations, LASEMA, Olatunde Akinsanya, said the agency activated the state’s emergency response plan immediately after receiving distress calls.

He added: “There was a structural defect in the building. We learnt that even the staircases were shaking, but people remained in the building.”

A resident, who identified himself simply as Stanley, said: “The number of casualties would have been higher but for the weekly Thursday market environmental sanitation exercise. A father and his son were rescued, but the father was unconscious. A woman lost her 18-year-old child in the building.”

A shop owner, Chidinma Asogwa, said: “The incident happened as some shop owners returned to the market before the weekly environmental sanitation exercise ended. I had a sister there, but she was rescued along with her son.

“The occupants were told to vacate the building on Monday, but it collapsed today.”

You Have 72 Hours To Vacate The Expressway Or Face The Consequences - Lagos Taskforce Warns Traders At Alaba Rago

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to street traders and illegal occupants operating along the Alaba Rago axis of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway.

The affected persons have been directed to vacate the area ahead of a planned enforcement exercise.

The Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, announced this in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Akerele said the move was part of efforts by the state government to enforce environmental laws and the ban on street trading as stipulated in the state’s Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

He said the planned operation, which would be carried out in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, was aimed at clearing illegal trading activities on highways, walkways, road medians, and setbacks along the corridor.

“The exercise is aimed at addressing growing concerns over environmental degradation, safety risks, and security challenges associated with the area,” he said.

The chairman urged traders and occupants of the affected locations to voluntarily relocate before the expiration of the notice.

He described the Alaba Rago corridor, situated along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, also known as the ECOWAS Road, as a strategic route that could no longer be allowed to suffer from widespread environmental and physical disorder.

“Lagos State cannot pretend or look the other way over the level of illegal activities and environmental hazards here.

“This situation does not reflect the status of a modern megacity. The time has come to enforce the laws and correct these abnormalities,” he said.

He noted that the enforcement exercise would tackle the proliferation of makeshift shops, illegal structures, mini brothels, used plastic depots, indiscriminate waste disposal, and other environmental infractions affecting the corridor.

The task force chairman said the state government had engaged stakeholders through dialogue and sensitisation before embarking on enforcement, in line with its inclusive governance policy.

“Everyone knows that trading on highways, walkways, and setbacks is illegal. However, because of the Lagos State Government’s people-oriented approach, we have engaged all relevant parties before taking action.

“After this, enforcement will commence against anyone who continues to violate the laws of the state,” he said.

He warned that goods belonging to violators would be confiscated after the expiration of the ultimatum, while offenders would face appropriate legal sanctions.

The chairman reiterated the commitment of the state government to maintaining environmental order, public safety, and security in line with the THEMES+ Agenda of the administration.

According to him, the enforcement exercise is being coordinated by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources under the leadership of the Commissioner, Mr Tokunbo Wahab. (NAN)

Following the uproar generated by the clip, Joseph was reportedly arrested and arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court in Lagos on a three-count charge of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, fighting, and unlawful assault, according to a court document.

The charge sheet partly read, “That you, Emeke Joseph ‘m’, on 21/06/2026 at No. 42 Ayomide Street, Isheri Oshun, Lagos, in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a way and manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by pushing one Ezaka Chisom Prisella ‘f’ without her consent, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 168(d) Law of Lagos State, Nigeria.

“The young man accused of assaulting Chisom in Lagos has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending further court proceedings. The matter has been adjourned to August 3, 2026,” the post read.

Police Shooting Of Truck Driver Over N500 Bribe Along Ikorodu Road: Victim And DPO Render Conflicting Accounts

A commercial truck driver is battling to save his leg after he was shot by a police officer at a checkpoint along the Ketu-Epe-Ikorodu Road in Lagos.

The victim, Peter Francis, was returning home from work on June 12, 2026, when officers attached to the Ketu-Ereyun Divisional Police Station stopped his vehicle.

According to his lawyer, Olatunji Ajayi, Francis complied after officers instructed him to switch on his vehicle’s interior light.

He noted that an officer identified as Ibrahim allegedly demanded a ₦500 bribe, but Francis explained that he had spent his remaining cash on food, which was on the back seat of the Toyota Corolla.

“Without any provocation, a police officer identified as Ibrahim, who was part of the team, opened fire on the vehicle occupied by Mr. Peter Francis and his friend. One of the bullets struck Mr. Peter Francis in the leg, causing severe injuries and leaving him in excruciating pain,” the lawyer said.

He further alleged that the “officers fled the scene immediately after realising Francis had been hit,” leaving the injured driver without assistance.

The gunshot reportedly attracted military personnel attached to the Lagos State Food and Logistics Hub, who “pursued the fleeing officers to their nearby police station, brought them back to the scene and directed them to take the victim to the hospital.”

According to him, Francis was allegedly turned away by two hospitals before he was eventually admitted to the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba, where he underwent emergency surgery.

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO(, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the shooting but stated that the official police narrative differs significantly from the version being presented by the victim and his lawyer.

“The officers involved have been detained for further questioning,” she said.

When asked about a meeting between the victim’s lawyer and Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani, as well as a petition filed on the matter, she said, “I cannot confirm that now.”

The Divisional Police Officer of the Ketu-Ereyun Divisional Police Station, CSP Kalu Chijioke, countered the lawyer’s account, claiming instead that the victim is a criminal suspect.

“On June 12 at about 21.10hrs, our officers were on a stop and search duty opened because of a government school close by. We are on the Lagos-Ogun border.

“This driver came in with a Camry (Muscle) with a female passenger in the driver seat. And according to the account of the senior officer who led the team, ASP Oguniyi said the vehicle was stopped and he complied.

“When he was approached, he sped off knocking down Oguniyi, brushing another and was rushing towards Corporal Tijani Ibrahim to ram him down, using the vehicle as a weapon, before the latter shot,” the DPO stated.

According to the DPO, Corporal Ibrahim fired at the speeding car, with the bullet ultimately striking Francis in the lower part of his knee.

“This is a case of attempted murder and assault of a police officer in his line of duty and unlawful possession of substances suspected to be illicit drugs,” the DPO in his account hinted.

Denying claims that his men fled the scene, CSP Kalu maintained that the officers immediately began arranging to transport the wounded driver to the hospital. According to him, a group of the victim’s colleagues (“motor boys”) soon stormed the station threatening to burn it down.

“That was when the soldiers accosted them to ask if our officers needed help—which was politely rejected—noting that the situation was immediately contained and that medical attention was provided to the victim,” Kalu said.

The DPO also confirmed that Francis was subsequently taken to two different hospitals, both of which refused to admit him, before he was finally accepted at the military hospital based on his intervention.

He then detailed the events that followed, lasting until Friday, as police struggled to secure the victim’s official statement and account of the incident.

“The records are there. He was referred from the first hospital to another, which refused to admit him. The victim’s life was the priority, and that was when I contacted the military hospital where he was eventually operated on. In fact, when we were unable to get an ambulance, we used our patrol vehicle.

“It was the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba, that admitted him, and he underwent surgery there. After the necessary tests, I donated blood and even made payment so his treatment could continue.

“All efforts to obtain personal statements from the lady and the victim after treatment have been futile as we speak.

“We’ve also spoken to the lawyer who came here and told him to give his client a statement form to fill out now that the incident is still fresh in his memory and he has received medical attention, but he refused.

“Our concern is that he gets better. Only then can we take the case to trial,” he said.

However, Francis’ lawyer stressed that his client was a law-abiding citizen returning from work and had documents proving his delivery assignment.

“Mr. Peter Francis is not a criminal suspect,” he said.

He disclosed that the shooting has left Francis unable to move the affected leg, with doctors recommending reconstructive plastic surgery to repair damaged blood vessels.

According to the lawyer, the financial burden includes: “₦1,126,600 in outstanding medical bills already incurred at the military hospital and ₦10 million estimated for corrective plastic surgery.”

The lawyer stated, “The total medical cost is estimated at more than ₦11.1 million.”

The lawyer also confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer of the Ketu-Ereyun Divisional Police Station, CSP Kalu Chijioke, visited Francis in hospital, donated blood, and transferred ₦400,000 to the victim’s bank account on June 15, 2026.

“The Divisional Police Officer… donated blood to Mr. Peter Francis and personally transferred the sum of ₦400,000 into his personal bank account. This conduct further suggests an acknowledgment of responsibility for the incident,” he stated.

However, he insisted that the gesture does not absolve the Nigeria Police Force of responsibility.

He called on the police authorities to cover all medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and compensation for the victim.

“In the circumstances, we respectfully call on the Nigeria Police Force to take full responsibility for the treatment, rehabilitation and all medical expenses incurred by Mr. Peter Francis as a result of the reckless and unlawful shooting of an unarmed and innocent civilian by one of its officers.

“Justice must be done, and adequate compensation must be provided to Mr. Peter Francis for the physical, emotional and financial trauma he has suffered,” the lawyer also concluded.

Seadogs, Firefighters Take Fire Prevention Awareness To Residents Of Amuwo-Odofin

The Federal Fire Service (FFS)

Fire safety professionals and the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) have called on Nigerians to be more conscious of the causes of fire outbreaks, stressing that prevention remains the most effective strategy against fire disasters.

The appeal was made during a fire safety sensitisation campaign organised by NAS in partnership with the Lagos State Command of the Federal Fire Service at Mile 2 Estate in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The organisers noted that while some fire incidents occur accidentally, many are caused by negligence, ignorance and failure to observe basic safety precautions.

Delivering a lecture on the causes and prevention of fire outbreaks in homes, the Operations Officer of Festac Fire Station, Mr. Oghene Michael, explained that fires are classified according to the nature of combustible materials involved and therefore require different methods of control and extinguishing.
He identified cooking gas, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), furniture, clothing, curtains and rugs among common combustible and flammable materials found in homes, warning that such materials can ignite easily under certain conditions.

According to him, substances in gaseous form are particularly dangerous because of their low ignition thresholds and ability to spread rapidly.
“Anything with a high flashpoint has a lower risk of ignition when exposed to heat. It is not the material itself that burns, but the vapour it produces. That is why substances in a gaseous state are generally more dangerous than those in liquid or solid forms,” he said.

Michael advised residents to identify and manage potential ignition sources, including matchsticks, lighters, faulty electrical connections, defective appliances and excessive heat.
As part of preventive measures, he urged parents to keep matches and lighters away from children, regularly inspect cooking gas cylinders and hoses, and ensure that kitchens and electrical installations are properly maintained.

He also encouraged good housekeeping practices, including the disposal of unused furniture, electrical appliances and other combustible materials that may obstruct escape routes during emergencies.
In the event of a fire outbreak, he advised occupants to evacuate immediately and contact the nearest fire service station without delay.

He cautioned against using water to extinguish fires involving petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, kerosene and cooking oil, noting that water could worsen such fires by spreading the burning substance.
Similarly, he warned against using water on electrical fires without first disconnecting the power source to avoid electrocution.

Michael explained that Carbon Dioxide (CO) fire extinguishers are best suited for flammable liquid and electrical fires, particularly in kitchens and locations containing sensitive electronic equipment, as they leave no residue after use.
He added that Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) extinguishers are effective against fires involving solid materials, flammable liquids and gases, making them suitable for homes, garages and other multi-risk environments.

The fire safety session also featured a practical demonstration by personnel of the Federal Fire Service, including Festac Station Commander, Oyibode Idowu; Operations Officer, Oghene Michael; and Drill Officer, Adebayo Sodiku, who simulated fire outbreak and suppression procedures for residents.
Earlier, the Head of NAS Festac Chapter (Saratoga Deck), Mr. Emeka Achonu, said the sensitisation programme formed part of the association’s quarterly community outreach activities for 2026.

He explained that NAS chapters worldwide regularly organise free advocacy programmes, health interventions and public enlightenment campaigns aimed at improving the well-being of communities and promoting human dignity.
As part of the initiative, the association donated firefighting equipment to the Mile 2 Estate community to strengthen local emergency response capacity.

How Air Force Officers Beat Driver To Death Along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway Over Minor Crash

A 43-year-old commercial bus driver, Joseph Okpe, has died after he was allegedly beaten by a group of officers of the Nigerian Air Force following a dispute over a minor traffic incident involving their vehicle.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on May 9 along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, where the officers allegedly assaulted the deceased.

Details of the incident were contained in an Affidavit of Facts filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in the Maitama Judicial Division.

According to the affidavit, deposed to by the deceased’s brother, Innocent Okpe, Joseph was carrying out his duties as a commercial bus driver when he was accosted by Air Force personnel travelling in a Coaster bus with registration number GO 1–14AF.

The officers allegedly accused him of hitting their vehicle and demanded N100,000 as compensation for the damage.

When Okpe could not provide the money, the officers allegedly descended on him, repeatedly punching and battering his face and head until he nearly lost consciousness.

It was further gathered that the assault only stopped after passersby and fellow commercial drivers intervened and pleaded with the officers.

According to the document, the bystanders also offered to raise N50,000 to compensate for the damage to the vehicle.

After the officers left the scene and continued their journey, Okpe was reportedly rushed to several hospitals but was allegedly denied treatment.

A source familiar with the incident, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said Okpe was eventually taken to Charing Cross Clinic in Mushin, Lagos, where he was pronounced dead at about 5pm.

“The incident happened sometime after 3pm. He was taken to several hospitals, but they refused to admit him.

“They got to the last hospital around 5pm, and he was pronounced dead there. He died the same day.

“The incident was immediately reported at the Ilasa Police Division.

“The matter is currently being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, after it was transferred from the Ilasa division,” the source said.

A Medical Certificate of Cause of Death signed by Dr Okechukwu Ogboo of Charing Cross Clinic, Mushin, and dated May 13, 2026, listed the primary cause of death as “severe head injury,” while the secondary cause was stated as “pulmonary failure until his death.”

Okpe left behind three children and a wife. When contacted on Monday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she would find out about the incident and provide an update on the matter.

However, she had yet to do so as of the time this report was filed.

How Commercial Driver Lost His Life In Multiple Crashes At Cele Oshodi

A commercial bus driver has lost his life in a fatal multiple-vehicle collision at Cele inward Oshodi, Lagos, prompting an emergency response from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The crash, which occurred on the busy corridor on Monday, involved a commercial mini-bus popularly known as a “Korokpe” and a Toyota Tundra pickup truck with registration number EPE 554 YC.

According to preliminary findings by security personnel at the scene, the driver of the commercial bus sustained severe injuries from the impact of the collision and died instantly.

LASTMA officials, who were on routine traffic monitoring duties in the area, quickly responded to the incident by securing the accident scene, managing traffic and coordinating emergency operations to prevent further disruption along the route.

Working alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Cele-Ijesha Division, LASTMA personnel recovered the body of the deceased driver and facilitated its release to family members living in the area.

The agency also evacuated the wreckage and all vehicles involved in the crash to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of other road users. The vehicles have been handed over to the police for a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and establish liability where necessary.

Despite the heavy traffic disruption caused by the incident, normal vehicular movement was restored within a short time following the intervention of traffic officials.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and drive responsibly to prevent avoidable road crashes.

LASTMA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining order on Lagos roads through prompt emergency response and effective traffic management.

LAWMA Condemns Attack On Its Officers Along Lagos-Badagry Expressway

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has condemned the attack on its enforcement officers by suspected illegal waste operators during an environmental monitoring exercise along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, issued the condemnation in a statement released on Monday in Lagos by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Mukaila Sanusi.

Gbadegesin described the incident as unacceptable and warned against any attempt to obstruct the agency’s lawful enforcement activities.

According to him, the attack occurred on Sunday at Mazamaza Bus Stop, shortly after FESTAC First Gate, during a routine environmental monitoring and compliance operation.

He said the enforcement team encountered individuals allegedly engaged in illegal waste disposal while carrying out their statutory duties.

“The enforcement team was attacked by suspected illegal waste operators and cart pushers who attempted to obstruct the exercise,” he said.

“Our enforcement officers were carrying out their statutory responsibilities when they were attacked by individuals seeking to frustrate government efforts,” he added.

Gbadegesin described the incident as a direct affront to government efforts to safeguard public health and maintain environmental sanitation across the state.

He stressed that such actions would not deter the agency from fulfilling its mandate of ensuring a clean and healthy environment.

The managing director noted that assaults on enforcement personnel constitute a serious offence under the law, adding that anyone found involved in the attack or obstruction would face prosecution.

He said efforts were underway to identify and apprehend all those connected to the incident.

Gbadegesin added that despite the attack, the enforcement team continued its monitoring operation along key corridors, including Iyana Iba, Okokomaiko, and Agbara.

He explained that the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

According to him, illegal cart-pushing activities and unauthorised dumpsites remain major challenges to effective waste management in Lagos State, posing significant risks to public health and environmental safety.

He urged residents and businesses to patronise only approved waste service providers and dispose of waste through authorised channels.

Gbadegesin also called on the public to support government efforts by complying with environmental laws and reporting illegal waste disposal activities.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained enforcement across the state, warning that offenders would continue to face sanctions.

No Safe Haven For Criminals In Lagos – LNS, Arrest Over 270 Suspects

As part of the ongoing war against crime and criminality in Lagos State, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA) has carried out a massive statewide raid of identified blackspots, criminal hideouts, and shanties across the metropolis, leading to the arrest of 279 suspected criminals, hoodlums, and miscreants.

Speaking while parading the suspects at the Agency’s Headquarters in Bolade, Oshodi, the General Manager of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency, Prince (Dr.) Ifalade Oyekan FISN warned criminals and other individuals with unlawful intentions to stay away from Lagos State or face the full weight of the law.

According to Oyekan, the operation was carried out from the late hours of Sunday through Monday as part of the State Government’s sustained efforts to rid Lagos of criminal elements and maintain law and order. He explained that the exercise was intelligence-driven, leveraging the Agency’s extensive network of community informants and operatives to identify black spots and criminal hideouts in various parts of the state.

The General Manager disclosed that a total of 279 suspects, comprising 274 males and five females from different parts of the country, were arrested for various offences, including theft, public nuisance, and other criminal activities. He noted that many of the suspects had no means of identification and could not provide verifiable residential addresses.

Oyekan further revealed that some of those arrested for constituting a public nuisance were individuals who allegedly entered Lagos aboard lorries and other vehicles commonly used to transport livestock and goods into the state. He emphasised that while every Nigerian has the constitutional right to reside in and move freely within any part of the country, Lagos State will not tolerate criminality or activities that undermine the peace and security enjoyed by residents.

“The exercise is in line with the mandate of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy Dr. Obafemi Hamzat to ensure that Lagos retains its position as the safest and most secure state in Nigeria despite its large and growing population. Through our intelligence network and collaboration with sister security agencies, we will continue to ensure that law-abiding residents feel the presence of government while criminals find no hiding place in Lagos,” he said.

The LNSA boss also disclosed that two suspects were apprehended while allegedly attempting to steal a submersible pumping machine from a residential apartment. Several others were found in possession of dangerous weapons, including machetes and knives, as well as suspected illicit drugs and other prohibited items.

Reiterating the Agency’s commitment to public safety, Oyekan stated that the operation would be sustained and expanded in collaboration with relevant security and law enforcement agencies across the state.

Following the raid, all the suspects were transferred to the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court for further investigation and possible prosecution.

No Suspect Has Been Arrested Six Weeks After Madam Olanike Adeola's Kidnap Ordeal In Lagos - Family

Six weeks after the abduction of Lagos resident, Madam Olanike Adebimpe Adeola, concerns are growing over the lack of arrests in the case, amid broader worries about Nigeria’s worsening security situation and the increasing prevalence of kidnapping across the country.

Madam Adeola was abducted in the early hours of April 21, 2026, when armed men reportedly forced their way into her residence in Lagos and took her away. According to accounts from the family, the attackers subjected her to physical and emotional trauma before demanding a ransom of ₦60 million for her release. The victim spent three days in captivity before regaining her freedom after relatives, friends, and supporters raised and paid US$15,000, the amount eventually negotiated with the kidnappers.

While her release brought relief to family members and well-wishers, the aftermath of the incident continues to take a toll on the victim and her loved ones. Family sources say the emotional and psychological effects of the ordeal remain significant, with concerns heightened by the fact that no suspects have been arrested six weeks after the incident.

The absence of arrests or publicly disclosed progress in the investigation has raised questions about accountability and the effectiveness of efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes. The case has also renewed attention on Nigeria’s broader security challenges. Kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common in several parts of the country, prompting calls for stronger security measures and improved protection for citizens.

Security analysts have repeatedly warned that the growing threat of abduction and violent crime is undermining public confidence and creating fear among residents, many of whom worry about their safety in homes and communities. The Adeola case underscores the need for sustained action by security agencies to track down perpetrators, strengthen intelligence gathering, and improve response mechanisms to violent crimes.

Agege Residents Cry Out As Alfa Nla Road Collapses

Residents and motorists have lamented the deteriorating condition of Alfa Nla Road in the Agege area of Lagos State and called for its urgent rehabilitation.

The condition of the road has caused persistent traffic congestion and hardship for road users.

The appeal followed concerns raised over the state of the road, particularly a badly damaged section that becomes flooded whenever it rains.

This also made movement difficult for motorists plying the route, which links the Pen Cinema and Oke-Koto areas of the community.

Residents told Punch correspondent that the road had remained in a poor condition for about three years without any intervention from the relevant authorities.

They noted that the situation had worsened during the rainy season as blocked drainage channels prevented rainwater from flowing freely.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Akeem, said motorists and residents had repeatedly appealed for the rehabilitation of the road without success.

According to him, the damaged section has become a major source of traffic congestion in the area, particularly during evening rush hours.

“The road has been like this for about three years. Once it starts raining, the water remains here because the drainage is completely blocked. Every day, motorists struggle to pass through this place,” he said.

Another resident, Bose Adeyemi, said the condition of the road often forced motorists to abandon the damaged lane and drive on the opposite side.

She said, “The traffic is usually terrible from around 6 p.m. Vehicles, especially commercial buses, are forced to use the other lane while facing oncoming vehicles. The other lane is now gradually getting damaged due to the pressure from the traffic.”

While Adeyemi disclosed this, Punch correspondent observed some buses already driving against traffic to avoid the damaged section of the road.

A commercial bus driver, Sulaimon Yusuf, said the poor condition of the road had increased vehicle maintenance costs.

He added that drivers were often compelled to slow down to avoid damaging their vehicles.

“You have to be very careful when driving through this road, especially when it rains. Some of the potholes are hidden under the water and can damage your vehicle if you are not familiar with the lane,” he said.

Residents blamed the worsening condition of the road on blocked drainage channels along the affected stretch.

According to them, the inability of rainwater to flow through the drains has accelerated the deterioration of the road and increased the risk of flooding.

“If you look at the side of the road, you will hardly believe there used to be a drainage there. It has been completely covered and now looks like an ordinary floor. This happened over time as the road continued to deteriorate,” another resident who did not want his name in print disclosed.

They urged the Agege Local Government and the Lagos State Government to intervene urgently before the road becomes completely impassable.

The spokesperson for the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Adesina Odunuga, could not be reached for comment on Tuesday as calls made to his telephone lines were not answered. A text message sent to him had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.
