FG Announces Partial Closure Of Ikorodu-Sagamu Road For Repair Works

The Federal Ministry of Works has announced partial closure of sections of the Ikorodu-Sagamu Road from Monday to facilitate the completion of ongoing reconstruction works.

The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Mr Olayiwola Komolafe, made this known in a statement on Saturday.

He said the closure followed a directive by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, ordering the contractor, Messrs Arab Contractors, to resume work on critical sections of the highway to ensure prompt delivery of the project.

According to Komolafe, the affected sections are the stretch from Ikorodu Roundabout to Sabo Junction in Lagos, and from Cement to Coca-Cola inward Sagamu.

Komolafe said that traffic from Ikorodu to Sagamu would be diverted through the construction corridors under a counterflow arrangement.

He said the construction would last for three months to allow the execution of works and curing of the rigid pavement.

The controller said that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be deployed to manage traffic during the period specially.

He appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic managers and law enforcement officers.

Komolafe said the ministry regretted any inconvenience the reconstruction work might cause to road users.

Tales Of Woe From NYSC Corps Members In Lagos As Acute Water Shortage Hits Camp

Corps members at the Lagos State orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps have complained about persistent water shortage allegedly caused by irregular electricity supply.

A survey by the News Agency of Nigeria at the camp showed that inadequate water storage facilities and unstable power supply had continued to affect the welfare and living conditions of corps members.

Many corps members said they now wake up as early as 1 am to queue for water before the start of daily camp activities.

A corps member identified simply as Annabel, who was deployed from Anambra State, described the situation as stressful.

“Sometimes we wake up at midnight just to fetch water. If you delay, you may not get enough water to bathe before the morning parade.

“After drills and activities under the sun, everybody needs water, but the supply is usually insufficient,” she said.

Another corps member, Ibrahim, said the shortage had forced many residents to ration water for basic domestic activities.

“Some people skip washing their clothes for days just to save water,” he said.

A female corps member, who identified herself simply as Mary, said many camp residents often descend long stairways carrying buckets and kegs in search of water.

“Even when water is pumped, it finishes quickly because the storage facilities cannot serve everybody adequately.

“The water usually stops running by 3:00 a.m., so everybody struggles to fetch before then,” she said.

Mary also alleged that the rush for water recently resulted in an accident involving a female corps member.

“One corps member fell while carrying water and sustained injuries during the rush,” she said.

Some corps members noted that the existing water tanks could no longer adequately serve the growing population of camp residents.

“The tanks are simply not enough for storage, as we don’t even get water on the 3rd floor. We have to go to the 2nd floor.

“The existing tanks can no longer adequately serve the growing population in camp,” a corps member said.

NAN findings showed that overcrowding, poor storage facilities and irregular electricity supply were major factors contributing to the situation.

Another corps member said she had resorted to buying sachet water for bathing to avoid the stress associated with fetching water.

“I don’t like stress, so I buy bags of sachet water for bathing on most days,” she said.

Some food vendors operating within the camp also expressed concern over the situation, noting that the shortage had increased their operating costs.

One of the vendors, who pleaded anonymity, said inconsistent electricity supply had affected access to water needed for cooking and cleaning.

“The cost of sourcing water is affecting our business because we depend on water for cooking and washing,” the vendor said.

Some corps members, however, commended camp officials for efforts made to ease the situation through water rationing and supplementary supply arrangements.

When contacted, the Head of Information and Public Relations Unit, NYSC Lagos, Mrs Omolola Aladesoun, told NAN that the authorities were aware of the challenge, which lasted briefly due to a power outage.

“We had a slight water shortage due to power failure, but everything has been resolved.

“We also have a standby generator used to pump water,” she said.

Don't Marry A Woman Who Demands Costly Wedding Or Cannot Cook - Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, recently shared a set of marital guidelines for young men warning that marrying for beauty alone or ignoring practical foundations could lead to a “deep trap.”

In an address during the May edition of the Holy Ghost Service, the cleric emphasised that spiritual discernment and domestic competence must outweigh physical attraction and social status.

Addressing the men, Adeboye warned against being blinded by physical appearance. He cautioned that a lack of prayer could lead a man to inadvertently “choose a demon” because of outward beauty.

“There are many demons that are very beautiful. If you marry because of beauty, you might choose a demon. I’m not saying all beautiful people are demonic. If it’s beauty alone that leads you into marriage, it’s a deep trap,” he said.

He also urged men not to marry a woman who cannot cook or is not hospitable.

“Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook. We are talking of excellent counsel. Only I can tell you these things. Even if a prophet says this is your wife, if she can’t cook, say ‘Thank you, keep her,'” he said, citing Sarah and the Shunamite woman as biblical examples of hospitable cooks.

He further advised men to call off any wedding where the woman demands a ceremony that would lead to debt.

“Don’t marry a girl who does not do things in moderation. No matter how close you are to a wedding and your girl is suggesting a wedding that is going to cost you everything you have and get you into debt, call it off, ” he directed.

On cosmetics, Adeboye warned against “excessive makeup,” false hair, and false nails.

He said, “The girl you are going to marry must not be heavily made up. If you look at the girl, the hair on her head is from India. The eyelashes are false. The nails of the hand are false. The nails of the toes are false. You must ask yourself the question, ‘What is behind the mask?’ Because one day you will discover that excessive makeup
is simply saying there is something to hide.

“I want my boys to end up well. When you check the Bible very well in 2 Kings 9:30-37, you will discover that the matron saint of makeup is Jezebel.”

You Can Marry Married Men, Pastor Odekunle Epaphras Advises Single Christian Ladies

Against the backdrop of an overwhelming number of Christian single ladies unable to find husbands even when they are long due for marriage, Pastor Odekunle Epaphras has advised Christian ladies that they can marry married men, contradicting traditional church doctrines on marriage. Pastor Epaphras  argues that not all women will find single men and some should consider married men if they are willing to formalize the relationship. This controversial advice has drawn diverse reactions and criticism, with some urging pastors to focus on scriptural teachings. Others however, say the pastor is right as the bible is replete with many men of God who married more than one wife and yet were very close to God. These respondents point to the fact that polygamy is a way of life for those in the region where Christianity originated from, and that the concept of monogamy in Christianity is a European culture imported into Christianity even when it is not in the bible.

Contrary to the doctrine of monogamy, for which the church is known for, Epaphras advised single ladies to date married men who are willing to meet with the ladies’ families and formalise the relationship.

According to Epaphras, not all ladies would be opportune to marry single men, as a result, some of them should look inwards the direction of married men.

The cleric gave the piece of advice while responding to some of the questions raised by his followers.

“Not everyone will marry single men. Some people will marry married men. If a married man wants to marry you accordingly, ready to meet with your family, and has made necessary arrangements with his family, you can go ahead and marry him,” the pastor stated.

”Some people may criticise this but it is my candid advice,” he added.

The 51-year old pastor hosts several programmes on social media, with the most prominent being the Online Radio Broadcast.

These programs are largely broadcast live on his Facebook page, Odekunle Epaphras Baba Mi O, and his YouTube channel.

However, other religious leaders, such as Prophet A.T. Joel, have opposed this view, encouraging believers to follow biblical standards rather than seeking human solutions to companionship, noting that polygamy is not commanded in scripture.

“I agree that salvation is the only thing that will take us to heaven but those who are genuinely saved will follow the word of God,” Prophet A. T. Joel said in a Facebook post.

“Polygamy is man's creation and like many other human errors, God isn't its author. God is faithful to sort us all. I know how painful it is for eligible singles especially sisters but we must not keep breaking God's Word to satisfy ourselves,” he added.

Prophet Joel went on: “No man’s word is superior to the scriptures, the Bible is the final authority over  all things. One thing every pastor must do is to help our brethren to fully trust God and flee ungodly desires and expectations.

Responding to Prophet Joel, a Facebook user with the name Abiodun William Shobowale said, “I commented on that post yesterday actually. Was sad to hear that from the man. It’s one temptation faced by men of God  because their ministerial focus is on women and marriage. Seeing many single ladies thronging his programme and yet having no ready suitors who will become husbands  might have been the factor responsible for such straying from the word of God. Since they wont allow him to rest, he had to look for a solution from his mind so that they can let him rest . May the Lord help him to correct himself.”

Some people who spoke with Lagos Today Extra, however, did not agree with Prophet Joel’s criticism. According to them, the bible does not condemn anyone for marrying more than one wife.

“If you carefully look through the bible, you would notice that those who where very close to God were polygamous in nature,” Ijeoma, who resides in the Yaba area of Lagos stated, adding that the concept of monogamy in Christianity was imported into the church by European missionaries who used it as an avenue to further expand the European cultures through Christianity.

“it’s sad that those in the Middle East where Christianity originated from, are a polygamous society; the Europeans who took the religion from them and brought it to us infused their monogamous culture and we Africans, who have a polygamous heritage, swallowed it hook, line and sinker,” Ijeoma told our correspondent.

Another respondent, Evangelist Adeleke, said even the New Testament of the bible does not forbid polygamy except for those occupying some ministerial positions in the church.

“You hear some people say polygamy in the bible is a doctrine of the Old Testament but the New Testament does not forbid it either. Look at 1 Timothy 3:2, Titus 1:6 and 1 Timothy 3:12.  Paul writes that if anyone aspires to the office of pastor or deacon, he must be ‘the husband of one wife’. What does that tell you? It simply means that any Christian, except those occupying those offices, can marry more than one wife. And it is easy to understand why the bible puts such a restriction on occupiers of those offices. A pastor or deacon is someone who should be focused on the ministry and not being diverted by family issues. It’s not because it is a sin to marry more than one wife. If marrying more than one wife is something detestable to God, he would never have gone near the likes of Jacob, David and many others who married more than one wife,” Adeleke said.

He however said he could never muster enough courage to publicly tell this to his church as he would be excommunicated if he did that.

Autistic Teenage Cyclist Presents Guinness World Record Certificate To Arts And Culture Minister

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, on Wednesday received a Guinness World Record certificate from 15-year-old autistic artist and cyclist, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, following his 686-mile cycling expedition from Enugu to Lagos.

The presentation took place in Abuja, where the minister described the teenager as an inspiration to Nigeria and the global autism community.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Nneka Anibeze, the Special Adviser to the minister, Musawa praised Kanye’s resilience, creativity and determination, while commending his family for supporting and nurturing his talents.

“Kanye is the personification of what makes us want to be better human beings. He continues to break every single glass ceiling and surpass every expectation,” the minister said.

She added, “When the world talks about the greats, and the likes of Mandela, I have no doubt that somewhere, the name Kanye will be there. I even believe that one day, he may be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. That is something I feel in my spirit.”

Earlier, Kanye’s mother, Silvia Tagbo-Okeke, formally presented the certificate to the minister and thanked her for supporting the teenager’s advocacy and artistic projects over the years.

“This second Guinness World Record is for cycling. He cycled from Enugu to Lagos, and it was also a tourism journey, captured along the way with community engagements and receptions in various states,” she said.

“We are here to officially present the record to our ‘Mummy’ because you have always supported us and our exhibitions over the years,” she added.

Dr Tagbo-Okeke also disclosed that Kanye is scheduled to hold an art exhibition at the United Nations headquarters in New York from May 20 to August 25, 2026.

Kanye, accompanied by his family and support team, completed the cycling expedition between March 19 and April 2, 2026, travelling across several states from Enugu to Lagos.

The journey, which promoted autism awareness and tourism, featured community engagements and official receptions showcasing Nigeria’s culture, heritage and landscapes.

The feat also established him as the youngest person to cycle more than 100 miles, surpassing the benchmark with a total distance of 686 miles covered during the expedition.

NIWA To Develop A West Coast Cargo Jetty For Seamless Water Transportation In The Subregion

The National Inland Waterways Authority has announced plans to facilitate the development of a West Coast cargo jetty aimed at enhancing the seamless movement of goods and services across the sub-region.

In a recent statement, the agency said that the development was part of a strategic move to maximise Nigeria’s vast inland waterways.

According to the statement, this was made known during a joint inspection of the Marina Jetty in Lagos last week by officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigeria Immigration Service, NIWA, and a delegation from Ghana comprising corporate and private sector trade representatives.

NIWA also stressed that it may operationalise some of its existing jetties to boost cargo traffic between Nigeria and Ghana as a pilot phase of the initiative.

Speaking during the event, the acting Managing Director of NIWA, Mr Yusuf Girei, reiterated the agency’s readiness “to support the proposed West Coast cargo jetty”.

He highlighted the availability of extensive waterfront infrastructure capable of driving efficient, technology-driven, and hassle-free cargo operations with direct access to key markets within Lagos.

Girei explained that NIWA’s expansive network of waterways positions it as a critical enabler of inland cargo movement across West Africa.

He noted that NIWA’s existing operational experience, particularly along the Calabar–Cameroon route, provides a solid foundation for scaling similar initiatives across the West Coast corridor.

“We are committed to leveraging our infrastructure and expertise to facilitate regional trade.

Our experience on the Calabar–Cameroon route demonstrates the viability of inland water transport in boosting market access within Nigeria and across West Africa,” Girei said.

NSCDC Takes Anti-Cultism Campaign To Lagos Schools

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos State Command, has warned pupils of Guided Path School against cultism, bullying, and other social vices to promote school safety and security awareness.

This is contained in a statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Oluwaseun Abolurin, on Thursday in Lagos.

Abolurin said the State Commandant, Mr Adedotun Keshinro, gave the warning during a sensitisation visit and interactive session held at the NSCDC State Command Headquarters, Alausa, Lagos.

He said Keshinro reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the safety of school children, teachers, and host communities.

“The commandant noted that the corps remains dedicated to protecting educational environments across the state,” Abolurin said.

According to the spokesperson, the NSCDC is working through strategic collaboration with stakeholders under the Safe School Initiative to ensure a secure learning environment for pupils and students.

He said the command hosted 17 pupils and three teachers on a field trip to expose them to the corps’ operations and educate them on citizenship and security awareness.

He added that the pupils were sensitised on school safety, the statutory roles of the NSCDC, and the importance of discipline within and outside the school environment.

“They were also educated on the dangers of cultism, bullying, smoking, harassment, assault, and other social vices, with officials advising them to shun behaviours that could endanger their future,” he said.

Abolurin said the session featured presentations by officials of the command, including the Head of Safe School and Legal Unit, Assistant Commandants Helen Gady and Adebimpe Bada.

He said they explained the functions, structure, and responsibilities of the corps.

The image maker said pupils and teachers also participated in an interactive session, asking questions and receiving clarifications on NSCDC operations, history, and uniforms.

He said the Director of Guided Pathway School, Mrs Lasaki Rizqah, expressed appreciation to the command, describing the engagement as impactful and educational.

“Rizqah noted that the visit enhanced pupils’ understanding of school safety, civic responsibility, and national security,” he said.

Abolurin said the engagement was part of ongoing efforts to promote public awareness and strengthen collaboration between security agencies and educational institutions in the state.

2027: Obafemi Hamzat Submits Nomination Form, As Reps Aspirant Wants Ticket Zoned To Ebute-Metta West

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the 2027 governorship election at the secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress  (APC) in Abuja.

Hamzat, speaking after the submission, reaffirmed his commitment to service, responsible leadership and the continued progress of the state, saying his decision to contest was driven by a sense of duty to the people of Lagos and a resolve to build on existing developmental strides.

Meanwhile, a House of Representatives aspirant for Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency, Abdulhakeem Animashahun, has urged the zoning of the party’s ticket to Ebute-Metta West ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying that fairness, equity, and security considerations demand a shift in political representation within the constituency.

Animashahun appealed during a live interaction where he outlined decades of imbalance in the zoning of the House of Representatives seat between the two major blocs in Lagos Mainland Federal Constituency.

According to him, Constituency II has dominated the seat for a disproportionate period, holding it for about 20 out of the last 27 years, while Constituency I has only had approximately eight years of representation since 1999.

He said that the initial tenure from 1999 to 2007 was held by a representative from Constituency II, who later moved to Constituency I, further complicating the zoning balance.

Animashahun noted that after Constituency II completed what should have been its second cycle of representation, the seat was expected to return to Constituency I.

He stressed that adopting a zoning arrangement would not only address longstanding grievances but also serve as a strategic move to prevent potential violence and ensure broader political participation in Lagos Mainland.

Speaking during a recent interview with Feelright TV, the actor recounted how things became tough for him while he was in Abeokuta, explaining that he made the decision in his moment of despair and was accompanied by his colleague, Olaiya Igwe.

“I had priced my own casket before, when everything and my life were in shambles in Abeokuta. I didn’t get myself anymore; I didn’t believe I could break through. Olaiya Igwe knows about it; I went there with him, and he started crying like a baby,” he said.

Odule explained that at the time, he felt completely stuck and discouraged, especially seeing people he once schooled with progressing in life while he struggled to find his footing.

How I Landed My First One Billion Naira Deal - Nollywood Star Actress, Tonto Dikeh

Nollywood star actress Tonto Dikeh has attributed her first billion-naira deal to discipline and restraint, saying the opportunity came through a prominent African figure who valued her conduct over qualifications.

In an Instagram post, the actress reflected on the concept of “access” and how she consciously maintained boundaries with people she respects.

She said the approach, which she once thought made her seem distant, later proved to be a foundation for trust and opportunity.

Dikeh revealed that a powerful contractor, whom she has known for years, offered her the deal after noting she never exploited their relationship or made personal requests despite being given an open invitation to do so.

According to her, the contractor said her consistent respect and distance made her the right choice when the opportunity arose.

The actress described the moment as emotional, saying it helped her realise that discipline and character could create opportunities that cannot be forced.

She wrote: “Access is a heavy responsibility. Growing up, I learned something early: the more I loved and respected you, the more careful I became around you. I kept my distance, not out of pride, but out of discipline. I didn’t want to misuse the privilege of access. For the longest time, I thought it made me strange, maybe even “too different” Or WEIRD”

“Then, a few years ago, everything made sense. I landed a job that changed my life, my first billion from a single deal. The truth? I wasn’t the most qualified. So I had to ask why me.

“The contractor who happens to be a very powerful figure in Africa said something I’ll never forget: “T, I’ve known you for years. Out of everyone around me, you’re one of the very few I could call on at any time, but you never took advantage of that. You never crossed boundaries. You never gave me a reason to avoid your calls. Because of requests, You never asked me for anything even when I literally gave you a blank cheque to always come to me for anything and everything. Infact you stayed away and only called to congratulate or celebrate with me when I win. So when this opportunity came, it felt right to give it to you.”

“I broke down in tears. In that moment, I realized something powerful: Being “different” wasn’t a weakness, it was preparation.

“Discipline protected my access. Restraint preserved my relationships. Character created opportunities I could never have forced.

“So yes, call it weird if you want. But sometimes, being wired differently is exactly what sets you apart, and positions you for favor you didn’t even ask for..

“So yes if I respect and genuinely love you and still keep my distance, now you understand why I’ll never be the girl to be in anyone face”.

Lagos House Of Reps Member Oke-Joe Accused Of Sidelining Yorubas In Empowerment Programmes, In Favour Of Igbos

The Federal House of Representatives Member representing Oshodi-Isolo II, Lagos State, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, has come under intense criticism after publishing the list of people in his constituency who have benefitted from his empowerment scheme.

Onuakalusi, a non-native and non-Yoruba, who got elected on the platform of Labour Party in 2023, is accused of empowering people of his Igbo ethnicity, while sidelining the Yoruba indigenes.

According to the allegation, his programmes sponsored 20 participants to China to study cyber Security , food processing, and artificial intelligence, among others. Another programme sent nine participants to South Africa to study nursing and diabetic care. It is alleged that, of the 29 participants, 24 are Igbos while the Yoruba participants are five.

Social media users have also questioned the authenticity of the Yoruba names, highlighting that some appeared to be poorly constructed or fabricated with AI. They specifically pointed to the inclusion of "Samuel Ajayi Crowther"—the name of the 19th-century missionary—as evidence that the list was not legitimate, alleging it was generated by AI.

The lopsidedness in the empowerment scheme has generated outrage from social media users, who lamented that Yoruba youths are being sidelined in their own state by a non-native in political power.

Reacting, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State, Wale Ajetunmobi, rubbished the empowerment scheme, with a post on X, saying, “This is utterly abominable. Marginalisation is not an accurate word to describe this; it’s outright ostracism. Haaa… a ti gba àbọ̀dè fun’ra wa.”

Sanwo-Olu’s aide also slammed a comment justifying the scheme, which claimed that the non-Yoruba majority favoured in the scheme deserved it because they are also Nigerians.

Ajetunmobi said, “So, the lopsided empowerment is fair game to you? You sick people are usually loud in criticising Tinubu for appointing Yoruba people to Federal positions but conveniently forget that the president has been appointing Nigerians. Now, a non-native Reps used resources meant for a Yoruba constituency to substantially empower his own kinsmen. Then, the beneficiaries suddenly became ‘Nigerians’. You silly idiots shift narrative conveniently just to look good before those marginalising your kinsmen in your land. O tin shiere.”

Say no to tribalism – Rep Onuakalusi

Also reacting, popular blogger, Japhet Omojuwa, described lawmaker Onuakalusi’s action as discrimination and a slap on his constituents.

@Omojuwa said, “This is a self-indicting post and a big slap on your constituency. That you didn’t even have enough self-awareness, to post this makes me wonder what other forms of latent and blatant discrimination are going on against the people you were voted to represent.”

Lagos Moves To Ensure Safer Waterways Transportation

Stakeholders have emphasised the need for boat operators to adhere strictly to safety rules in order to eradicate the menace of boat accidents on the nation’s waterways.

The stakeholders made this call on Wednesday in Lagos at the Ferry Safety Development/Mentoring Programme for ferry operators, organised by the Lagos State Waterways Authority in collaboration with Interferry.

Speaking at the programme, the Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the initiative marks a historic milestone as Africa’s first ferry safety development and mentoring programme.

According to him, ensuring the safety of everyone who journeys on our waterways is not just a duty; it has been a calling for over 10 years that I have been at the head of Lagos Waterways.

“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to this cause with renewed vigour and ambition. Over the next 18 months, 50 exceptional ferry professionals will embark on a transformative journey of training and mentorship, guided by world-class experts from Interferry and Nigeria’s leading maritime institutions. Among you are captains, deckhands, marine engineers, safety officers, and of course, fleet managers, each vital to our mission,” Emmanuel said.

While acknowledging a decline in boat accidents in the state, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel stressed the need for operators to strictly adhere to established rules and regulations.

“Because if you don’t cooperate with the rules and regulations, there’s no way we are going to have a safe waterway. I think we have still kept records. As of last year, we just had one major incident, which was almost towards the end of the year, which was very sad for us, because Lagos has gone the whole year without any major incidents,” he stated.

He added that the structured high-level training programme blends self-paced learning, dynamic online mentorship, and hands-on practical sessions.

Emmanuel stressed that together, these pioneers will usher in a new era of safety culture on Lagos waterways.

He said, “Permit me at this point to say that over 10 years ago, when I started working in LASWA, I remember accidents were a frequent occurrence on these waterways. I would go home thinking, I hope they’re not going to call me and tell me there’s an accident that is coming.

“We just want to continue to emphasise that we cannot overemphasise safety. Safety is so important. Before we talk about prosperity, before we talk about better health, we need to imbibe the safety culture.”

He stated that the collaboration with Interferry is a testament to Lagos’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding every passenger on every vessel and every single day, reaffirming the government’s dedication to creating a safe, efficient, and world-class inland waterway system for all.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Interferry, Mike Corrigan, said the programme is the company’s commitment to improving safety in the developing world.

“Because we know that safe waterways are critical to stimulating economies and growth. We understand and know that it’s an 18-month programme with 18 different modules. And we are going to be along with you for the entire ride. While we can’t be there in person for the entire journey, we plan to get there whenever we can,” he said.

A representative of the Lagos Area Office of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Kelvin Abah, congratulated LASWA and Interferry on the historic launch.

“As the apex regulatory body of NIWA, NIWA is proud to be associated with this laudable initiative. Safety is a shared mission, and we appreciate the 18-month programme. Reliable water transportation is the bedrock of the blue economy. LASWA is setting a stellar benchmark for water safety,” Abah said.

A representative from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Mr Stanley Wali, said that the initiative shows a commitment to enhancing safety in the maritime ecosystem.

“Safety is a top priority; the programme is timely. Safety on the waterways is a shared responsibility, and NIMASA remains committed to delivering international conventions for the country. This is aimed at reducing loss of lives and property on the waterways,” he said.

The 18-month programme aims to train 50 boat operators to elevate ferry safety standards, enhance operational efficiency, and improve professional competencies across the Lagos water transport sector.

Family Seeks Justice Over Three Years Detention Of Their Teenage Son

The family of Michael Adeniyi has demanded justice over his continued detention, alleging that the teenager has spent about three years in custody after being arrested as a minor.

It was gathered that Adeniyi was arrested in 2023 by officers attached to Area F Command, Ikeja, when he was 14 years old.

His sister, Tosin, said others arrested alongside him were released the same day after allegedly paying for their freedom, while Adeniyi remained in custody due to his family’s inability to raise the required funds.

Despite being a minor at the time, he was reportedly detained and later remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

“We did not see him at home when the incident happened. It was later, around December 2022, that the man he was apprenticed to called to inform us that Michael was in Kirikiri. When we got there, he said he was arrested during a police raid and that while others were granted bail, he was not because he had no phone to contact the family,” she said.

Tosin added that his case has suffered repeated adjournments.

“We also learnt that the police were invited to testify in his case, but they failed to appear. It was only after the judge threatened action that an officer showed up, and he told the court that my brother did not commit any offence,” she said.

She lamented the toll of the situation on the family, noting that both parents died while efforts were ongoing to secure his release.

Meanwhile, the Take It Back Movement has condemned the incident, describing it as a reflection of systemic abuse within the law enforcement system.

In a statement signed by its Lagos State Coordinator, Taofeek Adekunle, the group said the case underscored issues of abuse of power and disregard for due process.

“This case is a clear example of how greed, abuse of power, and disregard for the law continue to destroy innocent lives. The continued detention of a minor under such circumstances is unacceptable,” the statement read.

The group called for the immediate release of Adeniyi, a thorough investigation into the officers involved, and compensation for the years spent in detention.

It also disclosed that it had engaged legal counsel and was prepared to pursue the matter to its conclusion.

Efforts to get a response from the Lagos State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls and a text message to its spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Over One Month Of Darkness: Residents Of Ilasamaja Face Threats Of Burglary And Hardship

Residents of Ogunbowale, Taiwo, and Adegbola streets in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos have raised concerns over a prolonged blackout that has lasted for over a month, warning that the situation is exposing the area to burglary and economic hardship.

The residents said the transformer serving the community had developed a fault around late March which prompted the Ikeja Electric to pick it up for repairs.

According to them, repeated visits to Ikeja Electric’s Okota office to know what the update on the repair was and when it will be fixed have yielded no tangible results, as officials reportedly continue to assure them that efforts are ongoing without providing a timeline.

A resident, Tayo Adedayo, lamented the situation, saying, “We have been in darkness for over a month and every effort we have made has yielded no results.”

Adebayo added that responses from the distribution company have remained the same.

“Any time we visit the Okota office of Ikeja Electric, the ready-made answer is ‘we are working on it’,” he said.

A trader who identified simply as Elizabeth said the blackout has affected daily living and business activities.

She noted that the intense heat has made it difficult to sleep, while businesses dependent on electricity have suffered losses.

“The blackout has really affected me. Many businesses are grounded because people need cold drinks and water, and those of us selling them have no sales. Hairdressers, barbers, welders — they are all running at a loss, and the fuel price hike has made it worse,” she said.

She also warned that the prolonged outage could heighten insecurity in the area.

Elizabeth further disclosed that the community had written letters, sent emails, and even protested during visits by government officials, but nothing has changed.

She said, “As for security, blackout exposes most people’s shops and homes to theft or being burgled, especially during the nighttime.

“I am aware that the community has written letters and mails to the distribution company, and we even protested when the deputy governor and local government chairman came around some time ago.

“My appeal to the electricity authorities is to do something fast about it because it is no longer funny and we cannot continue folding our arms and keeping quiet. I guess it is because we have not been given prepaid meters that is why we are being treated this way.”

Another resident, Babatunde Gabriel, said the situation has forced residents to take extra security measures to prevent theft of electrical infrastructure.

“We now have to watch over the IE upriser cable from being stolen. We have reached out to Ikeja Electric management, but they just keep promising without a specific time to restore power,” he said.

He urged the company to treat residents with urgency and empathy, adding, “We want them to treat us like human beings and show a human face.”

When contacted for a reaction, the Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, Kingsley Okotie, appealed to residents of the affected communities to exercise patience.

He noted that since the agency had taken the faulty transformer for repair, it would be returned as soon as possible.

“We are not happy that potential customers who would help the company to drive revenue are left in that situation. Within the shortest possible time, it will be returned.

“We are appealing to them to exercise a little bit of patience with us and we will fix it very soon,” Okotie said.

How Jilted Lover Bathed Spa Worker With Acid In Lekki

A female spa worker in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State, Olorunseunfunmi Awosogbon, is receiving medical treatment after she was reportedly attacked with a corrosive substance suspected to be acid in an incident linked to a dispute involving her employer.

It was gathered that Awosogbon, popularly known as Ajoke, had been assigned to a client who booked a home massage session on October 25, 2025.

The appointment was scheduled for Lakowe Golf Gate, near Utmost Care Hospital, Lakowe, where the incident occurred.

She was said to have arrived at the location in a ride-hailing vehicle when a man, identified in court filings as 37-year-old Ziaulihak Zakari, allegedly approached and poured the substance on her.

According to court documents and the spa owner, Olorunmaye Ifeoluwa, the suspect was allegedly engaged by a 25-year-old man, Owolabi Daniel, following the breakdown of a personal relationship between Ifeoluwa and Daniel.

Recounting events leading up to the incident, Ifeoluwa said she met Daniel earlier in 2025 when he booked a massage session at her spa.

“He requested that I attend to him personally. After that, he kept in touch and expressed interest in a relationship,” she said.

She explained that the relationship lasted a few months and was marked by disagreements.

“I later told him I needed space and that the relationship would not work. He continued to reach out, but I made it clear I did not want to continue,” she added.

According to her, she subsequently began receiving threatening messages from unknown numbers.

“The messages contained threats to my life. I reported the matter, but the numbers could not be traced at the time,” she said.

She also noted that suspicious home-service bookings had been made shortly before the attack.

“On one occasion, a client stopped responding after my staff arrived at the location. A similar booking came in later for the same area,” she said.

Describing the day of the incident, Ifeoluwa said, “Awosogbon called me in distress, saying a substance had been poured on her and that it was suspected to be acid. I immediately arranged for her to be taken to the hospital.”

Awosogbon was initially treated at a medical facility in Lekki before being transferred to another hospital in Ikeja for specialist care.

Ifeoluwa alleged that threatening messages continued after the attack.

“The sender indicated that the attack was not the end and that I was still being targeted. ‘I’m going to kill you soon. You deserve to be in a grave,’ among others,” she said.

She added that a private investigation later linked the messages to a known individual, after which the matter was reported to the police and an arrest made.

Undated charge sheets filed at a Magistrate Court in Ebute-Metta indicate that Zakari and Daniel are facing counts including conspiracy, alleged threats to life, and causing bodily harm.

One of the counts states that the defendants “conspired to commit a felony” under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Another alleges that Daniel sent threatening electronic messages, while a third states that the victim sustained injuries after a chemical substance was poured on her.

Efforts to speak directly with Awosogbon were unsuccessful as she was said to be undergoing medical procedures.

However, Ifeoluwa expressed concern over her safety, noting that Daniel had been granted bail.

“I am worried about my safety and that of my staff,” she said.

The victim’s lawyer, John Olobayo, criticised the handling of the case, arguing that the charges did not reflect the severity of the allegations.

“Based on the available information, we believe more serious charges should be considered,” he said, adding that petitions had been submitted to relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Justice.

When contacted, the father of one of the suspects, Mr Owolabi, declined to comment in detail and referred enquiries to his lawyer.

“Everything we did was through the lawyer,” he said, adding that he had contributed financially to the victim’s treatment.

Responding to questions about an alleged N60m payment for the victim’s surgery, he said in Yoruba, “Everything we have done was through the lawyer. I sold my house to pay the money. I don’t know what more is expected of us.”

When informed that journalistic ethics do not permit disclosure of sources, he declined further comment.
