Fake Naval Officer, Wife And Orderly Arrested In Oworonshoki

The Lagos State task force has arrested three impostors who unlawfully presented themselves as officers of the Nigerian Navy, thereby defrauding members of the public and obstructing lawful government operations.

The spokesperson for the agency, Raheem Gbadeyan, in a statement, stated that the suspects were apprehended by the chairman, Adetayo Akerele, following an incident linked to the demolition of illegal shanties and encroachments on government land in the Oworonshoki area of the state.

While identifying the principal suspect as one James Robert, Gbadeyan stated that the suspect had allegedly been using a false military identity to evade justice, intimidate residents, and secure undue advantages.

The statement added that the suspects were apprehended at the task force office while they were seeking the release of the vehicles removed from the demolition site.

According to Gbadeyan, the principal suspect failed to provide information about his primary military assignment and command after he was interviewed by the chairman.

The statement partly read, “The principal suspect, identified as James K. Robert, based on the name tag on his uniform and the visitor’s register he filled at the chairman’s office, had visited the office seeking the release of vehicles removed from the demolition site by the agency responsible for the exercise.

“This was after several statutory notices and repeated appeals were issued to him to evacuate his property ahead of the planned demolition, all of which he ignored.

“The suspect, accompanied by his wife and an alleged orderly, claimed ownership of the car lot at the demolition site and demanded that they be spared in the ‘spirit of esprit de corps.’”

When the chairman refused to compromise professional ethics and public service regulations, the statement noted that the fake naval captain became aggressive and issued threats of confrontation between his purported men and task force operatives.

“Suspicions were further raised when Akerele conducted a detailed interview, requesting information about the suspect’s primary military assignment and command.

“Closer observation revealed several inconsistencies, including incorrectly worn service ribbons, the absence of required regimental insignia, and an overall shabby appearance inconsistent with that of a senior naval officer. These red flags confirmed the chairman’s suspicions.”

The chairman was said to have immediately contacted the Naval Police unit of the Nigerian Navy, who verified that the individual was not a serving officer.

According to the statement, the confirmation led to the prompt arrest of the suspect and his accomplices.

Speaking on the incident, Akerele disclosed that the suspects had already been under surveillance following repeated altercations with task force officers during field operations, as well as numerous complaints from members of the public about a man posing as a Navy Captain to intimidate and coerce residents into compliance under false pretences.

The suspect’s wife was also said to have admitted that she had repeatedly warned her husband to desist from impersonating military personnel, noting that “several days are for the thief, but one day is for the owner.”

The chairman further revealed that his suspicions deepened when the suspect’s alleged orderly and other accomplices tactically withdrew from the scene shortly before the arrest.

“Before the suspects could fully comprehend what was happening, officers of the Nigerian Navy Military Police were already on the ground and took them into custody. They are currently undergoing further investigation,” Akerele stated.

He assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted by the appropriate military authorities, expressing confidence that the arrest would serve as a strong deterrent to others who impersonate security personnel to perpetrate crimes and tarnish the image of the police and armed forces.

“I urge members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to report suspicious activities through our official feedback channels for prompt action. No criminal will be allowed to find haven in Lagos State,” he further stated.

How 103-Year Old Woman Lost Her Life In A Fire Incident At Oyingbo

A fire outbreak at a residential building on Bola Street, Oyingbo has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman and destroyed several household properties.

According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received a distress call about the fire outbreak at about 12pm on Friday.

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a bungalow with shops attached had been engulfed in flames.

He stated that emergency management procedures were immediately activated at the scene, but after an assessment, the centenarian woman had died.

He said, “Upon the arrival of the LRT at the incident scene by 12:13 hours, it was observed that a residential bungalow with two shops attached was engulfed by fire at the aforementioned location.

“The fire reportedly started in a room before spreading to other rooms within the building. However, the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

“Unfortunately, one life—a 103-year-old centenarian (name withheld)—was lost to the incident.”

The permanent secretary also noted that eight rooms, a mini flat, six shops, and several household properties were affected by the fire.

“The recovered body has been handed over to the family for necessary action. The fire has been completely extinguished.

“The Agency’s LRT and LASEMA Fire Unit, in collaboration with other responders, successfully curtailed and contained the fire. Dampening down has been concluded, while rescue and recovery operations have also been concluded,” he added.

Traffic To Be Diverted For 18 Weeks For Mazamaza Bridge Repair Works - Transport Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has released a traffic diversion plan ahead of maintenance works on the expansion joints and bridge elements of Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry carriageway.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the traffic plan in a statement.
Osiyemi said the maintenance work, which would be on both the service lane and toll lane (both inbound and outbound) would commence from Monday, Jan. 19, to Thursday, May 28 (18 weeks).
Assuring motorists of adequate traffic management during the rehabilitation work, he said that at no stage would the bridge be fully closed.
“Instead, traffic will be managed through strategic diversions between the toll lane, BRT lane, and service lane.
“The rehabilitation works will be done in phases with the preliminary phase expected to commence from Saturday, Jan. 24 to Friday, Jan. 30 (one week).
“Phases one to four expected to cover the entire stretch of Mazamaza Bridge on both service and toll lane (inbound Badagry) is from Saturday, Jan. 31 to Monday, March 30 (eight weeks).
“Phases five to eight expected to cover the stretch of Mazamaza Bridge on both service and toll lane (inbound Lagos), is expected to commence from Tuesday, March 31 to Tuesday, June 2 (nine weeks),” he said.
Osiyemi noted that in view of the above, Mazamaza Bridge—on both the inbound and outbound Lagos-Badagry Carriageway—would be temporarily and partially closed to traffic during ongoing repairs.
He said that traffic would be redirected along the designated diversion routes.
Osiyemi said for phases one and two: Badagry bound traffic (repair on the toll lane), during ongoing construction all traffic would be temporarily redirected to the BRT corridor.
“Motorists will exit the BRT corridor and rejoin the toll lane 50 metres past the work zone to continue their journey.
“During construction on the BRT corridor, vehicles will be redirected to the toll lane, and regain access back to the BRT corridor 50m away from the proposed working area to continue their journeys,” he said.
For Phases three and four: Badagry bound traffic (repair on the service lane), he said vehicular traffic would continue through but, as vehicles approached the planned work zone on Mazamaza Bridge, they would be redirected to one of the two available lanes.
Osiyemi added that they would regain full access to the road after the proposed work zone to continue their journeys.
He said after finishing maintenance on the expansion joint of Mazamaza Bridge heading towards Badagry, the work would move to the opposite side of the bridge, this time for the lane coming into Lagos.
The commissioner said that during phases five and six of the project, Lagos-bound traffic would be diverted to the BRT corridor while repairs are carried out on the toll lane
“Vehicles will exit via the BRT Corridor and rejoin the toll lane 50 meters past the construction site to continue their journey.
“During BRT corridor construction, traffic will be rerouted onto the toll lane, and motorists will regain access back to the BRT corridor 50m away from the proposed working area to continue their journey,” he said.
He noted that during phases seven and eight, while repair work is carried out on the Lagos-bound service lane, vehicles would still be able to move, but traffic approaching the work zone on Mazamaza Bridge would be reduced from two lanes to one
“Motorists will regain full access to the road after the proposed work zone to continue their journeys,” he said.
Osiyemi urged motorists to follow traffic signs and the instructions of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers and other relevant authorities to help ensure smooth movement during the rehabilitation phases.

Outrage As 9-Month Twins Die After Immunization At Ajangbadi Primary Health Centre In Ojo

The deaths of 9-month identical twin brothers, Testimony and Timothy, less than 24 hours after receiving routine vaccines  in a Lagos health facility, has sparked outrage   as questions are now being raised about immunization procedures at the Lagos primary health centre where the immunization took place.

The father of the twins, Samuel Alozie, also known as Promise Samuel on TikTok, said his sons, Testimony and Timothy, were taken for immunisation at the Ajangbadi Primary Health Centre in Ojo Local Government Area on the morning of 24 December 2025. He claimed the twins became weak shortly after the injections and died the following morning, on Christmas Day.

The case gained public attention after Alozie posted a video online showing the bodies of the twins in separate body bags. In a subsequent video, he gave his account of events leading to their deaths.

“It happened that the immunisation was conducted on the 24th of December, in the morning. And on the morning of 25th December, they died,” he said. “On that 24th, after the injection, they were very weak, and I gave them paracetamol because the nurse said that if the temperature continued, I should give them paracetamol.”

He said the medication did not improve their condition. “The drug weakened two of them to the extent they can’t talk, they can’t eat, they can’t play as usual,” he added.

Alozie accused health workers at the facility of administering expired, fake or excessive doses of vaccines and alleged that deworming tablets were given to the infants without his consent. “Before you go for immunisation, try to know what they are giving to your child, because I guess maybe this is an overdose, or it is fake drugs,” he said.

He also questioned the presence of a nurse unfamiliar to him on the day of the immunisation. “The woman that have been giving us injections is not the woman who gave us the injection that day. Another face,” he said.

The father rejected claims allegedly made by the health centre that the deaths were caused by food-related bacteria. “She said that it is food bacteria that killed my children. How can food bacteria kill a child?” he asked.

While the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board have not issued an official statement on the incident, Alozie said an autopsy had been conducted but expressed concern about the credibility of the findings.

“I’m scared. The reason I’m scared is that I don’t know if this government will give me the actual justice because, you know, this is government-to-government,” he said. “I know that they will manipulate this result.”

He appealed for legal and public support, saying he lacked the financial means to pursue the case alone. “Please, if you’re a lawyer, a human rights lawyer, please help me. I don’t have a lawyer,” he said. “People should help me. I need justice for these children.”

The case has sparked public debate on vaccine safety, consent and accountability within public health facilities, with calls for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The Kidnap Of Muhammad Abdullahi A Student Of Katsina School For The Blind And Matters Arising

Although policies and laws exist to protect persons with disabilities in Nigeria, implementation remains weak. Disability-inclusive security planning is rarely considered, and emergency response systems do not adequately account for the unique needs of vulnerable groups, OSAS EGHAREVBA writes.

Nigeria today is battling a deep and persistent security crisis. From kidnapping and banditry to terrorism and violent crimes, insecurity has gradually become part of everyday life. Citizens now live in fear, uncertain of their safety whether at home, on the road, in schools, or even in places meant to provide protection and learning. This growing insecurity reflects years of weak security coordination, poor intelligence gathering, and inadequate protection of vulnerable populations.

The failure of security in Nigeria is no longer limited to isolated areas or particular groups. It cuts across states, institutions, and social classes. Schools, which should be safe environments for learning and personal development, have become targets of criminal activities. Students are abducted, teachers are attacked, and communities are left traumatized. This situation has damaged public confidence in the ability of the state to protect lives and property.

Against this troubling background, the recent kidnap of Muhammad Abdullahi, a blind student of the Katsina School for the Blind, is especially heartbreaking. That a child with visual impairment was abducted while simply trying to access education shows how deep the security failure has become. If a blind student is no longer safe on his way to school, it raises serious questions about who is truly protected in this country.

This incident exposes the harsh reality that insecurity affects people differently. While all Nigerians suffer from insecurity, persons with disabilities face greater risks. A blind student relies on routine, assistance, and familiar environments to move safely. When these fragile safety structures collapse, such individuals are left extremely vulnerable. Criminals exploit this weakness, knowing that victims may find it difficult to escape or seek help.

As a student of the University of Benin, I am deeply disturbed by this incident. Even within Nigerian universities, there is limited assistance and institutional support for students with disabilities. Many rely on personal effort, goodwill from fellow students, or informal arrangements to survive academic life. When insecurity spreads into educational spaces, these students are the first to suffer the consequences.

Beyond security failure, this situation reflects a broader neglect of disability issues in Nigeria. Although policies and laws exist to protect persons with disabilities, implementation remains weak. Disability-inclusive security planning is rarely considered, and emergency response systems do not adequately account for the unique needs of vulnerable groups.

The kidnap of Muhammad Abdullahi should not be treated as just another tragic headline. It should serve as a wake-up call for government at all levels, security agencies, school authorities, and community leaders. Protecting the vulnerable is not optional; it is a moral and constitutional responsibility.

Nigeria must urgently strengthen its security architecture, particularly around schools, and adopt inclusive measures that consider the safety of persons with disabilities. Failure to act decisively sends a dangerous message that the lives of the most vulnerable can be ignored.

Until meaningful reforms are implemented, incidents like this will continue to expose a painful truth: Nigeria’s security crisis does not just threaten lives—it strips the most vulnerable of their dignity, safety, and hope.

"I'm Not Anu's Father", Davido Insists, Threatens Legal Actions Against Mother Of Teenage Girl

Grammy-nominated singer, Davido, has denied paternity of a teenage girl, Anu, who claims he is her father.
In a statement on social media, Davido rejected Anu’s claims and accused her mother of being an “obsessed fan” who is manipulating her daughter.
Anu posted a message on Instagram requesting a DNA test to establish her identity.
She shared her struggles with bullying and mental anguish, saying classmates mocked her claims of being Davido’s daughter.
Anu wrote: “This year I become a teenager. My mom and grandma have always educated me on being a responsible teen. No drugs, alcohol, bad company and bad behavior. Today I drafted a letter I wrote from the depth of my heart not with help from my relatives.
“As I grow older I want to establish my identity. I was bullied in school since I was 6-year-old and cried home daily. Other students laughed at me when I told them my father was Mr David Adeleke. I went through a lot of mental anguish and visited a medical professional to protect my mental health. It was a sad challenging time in my life.
“This page was not online for 5 years as my mom never updated this account since it was handed over to us. We went through a lot. Despite the challenges, I still excelled to the top of the class and became the class prefect. We posted some of my report cards on this page. Now that I’m in secondary school and still excelling in my studies, I don’t talk about my family history anymore.
“However on that note as I transition into a young woman, I am respectfully asking Mr David Adeleke Singer @davido for a DNA test to establish my identity. This test is between my dad and I. It is something I want. It is something that’s the right thing to do. Please sir, consider my request once you read this post. I also sent it to your DM.
“Thank you to all Nigerians who have given me emotional support for the last 7 years. This DNA test is the right thing to do for me.”
However, Davido said he has already undergone five DNA tests, all of which were negative, and challenged Anu’s claims.
The singer expressed frustration and disappointment, saying he’s chosen three hospitals for the tests, and Anu’s team chose two, all with the same negative result.
“I’VE TAKEN 5 DNA TESTS ALL NEGATIVE I AM NOT YOUR FATHER … NEVER EVEN MET UR MOM .. SHES AN OBSESSED FAN LYING TO YOU … THIS NEEDS TO STOP I ACTUALLY HAVE CHILDREN .. STOP THIS NONSENSE. Yes I chose 3 hospitals and they chose their own two hospitals .. all came out Negative .. “
Davido threatened to take action against Anu’s mother, saying she needs to be held accountable.
“This is the last time I’m speaking on this nonsense. Never met the bitch … except when went For the DNA … very stupid behavior I will soon treat their FK … 5 fucking hospitals just to be clear .. the mom needs to go to jail … I don’t blame the poor girl ..”, he added.

Chemical Preservatives Now Used On Moi Moi Sold In High Brow Malls In Lagos And Other Nigerian Cities

Article By Dumbiri Frank Eboh

Now consider this scenario. You see a lovely pack of moi moi on the shelf of a shopping mall. You buy it and take it home for the purpose of consuming it but after eating a portion of it, you realize you have lost appetite and cannot finish the entire pack. You leave it on top of the sink in the kitchen and go to sleep.

Next morning and you are about to dispose of the remnant moi moi when you suddenly discover that it has not shown any sign of decay even though it has been exposed since the previous evening. In fact, when you take it up to your nose and smell, it smells the same way it was when you bought it the previous day.

Now curious, you decide to leave it in the kitchen till evening. However, when you come back in the evening, the story is the same: the moi moi has not shown any sign of decay. And it stays that way for one, two, and three whole days before you begin to notice small signs of decay.

The above situation is not fictional. It was the experience of Mr Kofi Bartels , a popular radio presenter with Nigeria Info 99.3 FM. You could feel the shock in Mr Kofi’s voice as he narrated his ordeal in the course of one of his programmes. And if you think his experience is a case in isolation, then you will need to think again. A lady, who gave her name as Linda, told Natural Health Africa that she bought a wrap of moi moi from a shopping mall in Port Harcourt and felt very uneasy after eating it. She felt like she had developed constipation. She was surprised when she went to the toilet the next morning and saw that everything came out the same way it had gone in.

“It was as if no digestion took place; the whole thing came out the same way I had eaten it. I had to examine it with the aid of a torchlight because the issue gave me a sleepless night and I was wondering if I had been poisoned even though nobody else but me touched that moi moi,” she said.

What Is Moi Moi?

Moi moi is a protein-rich, steamed bean pudding that is a good source of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as iron, folate, and potassium. A 100g serving contains approximately 108-155 calories, 6.5-13g of protein, 2-3g of fat, and 16-24g of carbohydrates. The exact nutritional value varies based on the ingredients and preparation, such as the amount of oil and other additions like fish, eggs, or meat.

Moi moi is a healthy food due to its high content of protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals from its main ingredient, beans. It supports muscle growth, aids digestion, and can help manage weight because it is low in fat and high in fiber. Its preparation as a steamed dish is also a healthier alternative to fried foods, and it is naturally gluten-free.

Naturally, moi moi that is left unprotected and unrefrigerated will begin to show signs of decay and spoilage when left overnight. This is often manifested in the taste, smell, and texture, making it undesirable or even unsafe for consumption. So, when such a pack of moi moi stays for up to 72 hours before beginning to exhibit these manifestations, then something must be wrong somewhere. But before we look into why this particular moi moi could not decay, let’s first look at the process of food spoilage and what causes food to decay.

How Bacteria Causes Food Spoilage

Bacteria and other microorganisms spoil food by breaking down its chemical composition for nutrients, which creates unwanted byproducts. This activity alters the food's taste, smell, and texture.

Microorganisms consume the proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in food through enzymatic action and metabolic processes, leading to characteristic signs of decay.

In the case of moi moi and other byproducts of beans, Bacteria secrete enzymes that break down proteins and amino acids. This process, known as putrefaction, produces foul-smelling compounds such as ammonia, amines, and sulfur-containing substances, leading to the rotten odor associated with spoiled moi moi.

It now becomes clear that if moi moi refuses to decay after a long period of time, something must have been introduced to prevent these bacteria from acting on it. And this takes us to another level of the conversation.

How Chemical Preservatives Prevent Food Spoilage

Chemical preservatives stop food spoilage by inhibiting or killing microorganisms and preventing oxidation, which causes rancidity. They work by creating an environment that is hostile to microbes and by slowing down the chemical reactions that lead to spoilage, thereby extending the food's shelf life.

Preservatives like benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and nisin can stop the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, or destroy them altogether, thereby extending the moi moi’s shelf life and making it look just as fresh as when it was cooked. Bottomline? Producers of this kind of moi moi do so to extend the shelf life of the food, and this they do by adding harmful preservatives for that purpose. But what is the health implication for the consumer. If moi moi cannot decay more than two days after it has been exposed, what is the guarantee that it would not affect the health of the consumer negatively.

How Dangerous Are Food Preservatives To Human Health?

The danger of food preservatives to human health varies, with some being linked to adverse effects like allergic reactions and asthma, while others are associated with more serious conditions like cancer and cardiovascular disease with long-term consumption. Some preservatives, such as sulfites, can trigger allergic reactions, while others like nitrites and some artificial dyes and emulsifiers have been linked to cancer, behavioral issues in children, and other chronic health problems.

Foods laced with preservatives do not digest easily and can disrupt the digestive process. Instead of speeding up digestion, the additives in these foods can cause inflammation and alter the gut microbiome, which can lead to digestive discomfort.

Preservatives And Digestion Problems

Harmful to gut bacteria: Many preservatives are antimicrobial, meaning they are designed to kill microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, and fungi to extend shelf life. This can disrupt the balance of your gut microbiome by killing off beneficial bacteria necessary for proper digestion.

Trigger inflammation: Preservatives like sodium benzoate and certain emulsifiers can trigger inflammation and irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. Chronic inflammation is a risk factor for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Inhibit enzymes: Preservatives can suppress the release of digestive enzymes, which slows down the digestion process. This can cause food to sit in the stomach for longer than it should, leading to indigestion and bloating.

Hinder nutrient absorption: An altered microbiome and inhibited digestive enzymes can prevent your body from properly absorbing nutrients from food. This means that even seemingly "balanced" processed foods can lead to nutrient deficiencies.

Contribute to constipation: Processed foods often lack fiber, an essential nutrient that helps regulate bowel movements. Combined with the effects of preservatives, this can lead to constipation.

Conclusion

Moi moi laced with preservatives is for the purpose of protecting the business of the producer at the expense of the health of the innocent consumer. So, when next you see that lovely pack of moi moi displayed on the shelf of a shopping mall, please ask questions before you pick it up.

Court Jails 33-Year Dispatch Rider 7 Years For Trafficking Tramadol In Lagos Island

A 33-year-old dispatch rider, Yahaya Nuru, was on Wednesday convicted and sentenced to a total of seven years’ imprisonment by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos for the unlawful distribution of large quantities of tramadol and other prohibited drugs.

Justice Musa Kakaki delivered the judgment after Nuru pleaded guilty to a four-count charge filed against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

At the arraignment, the prosecutor, Peter Ekuri, told the court that the convict, alongside others still at large, committed the offences in November 2025 at No. 6 Ashogbon Street, Lagos Island.

“Nuru conspired with Abdulrazak and Chukwu Emmanuel Emeka, who are currently at large, to unlawfully deal in controlled substances,” Ekuri said.

He further informed the court that Nuru was arrested with 4.12 kilograms of tramadol hydrochloride, 40 millilitres of tramadol hydrochloride injection, one litre of diazepam injection, and 1.04 litres of tramadol hydrochloride injection, which he intended to dispatch to different buyers.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 20(1)(a) and 11(c) and are punishable under Section 20(2)(a) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Following the guilty plea, Ekuri urged the court to convict and sentence Nuru. “In view of Nuru’s plea of guilt, the facts reviewed, and the exhibits tendered, we urge the court to act in accordance with Section 247(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015,” he said.

While pleading for leniency, the defence counsel asked the court to “temper justice with mercy,” noting that the convict was a first-time offender who saved the court’s time by pleading guilty.

Delivering the sentence, Justice Kakaki said he had considered the allocutus of the defence and the fact that Nuru was a first-time offender.

“In the circumstances, the defendant is sentenced to four years, five months, one month, and three years’ imprisonment on counts one, two, three, and four, respectively,” the judge ruled.

The court also ordered Nuru to pay fines of N300,000, N30,000, N50,000, and N200,000 on the respective counts as an option to imprisonment.

Justice Kakaki further directed that “both the sentences and the fine options shall run concurrently.”

BRT Driver Arrested For Killing A Pedestrian In Ikeja

The Lagos State Government has arrested a Bus Rapid Transit driver following the death of a pedestrian, identified as, Elizabeth Fresh, who was knocked down by a high-capacity bus along the Airport Junction, Ikeja.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority confirmed that the fatal incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, and involved a bus operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company under its regulation.

In a statement dated January 12, 2026, and signed by the Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the authority said the driver fled the scene after the incident but was later apprehended and handed over to the police.

“Subsequent eyewitness accounts confirmed that Miss Fresh was struck by a high-capacity bus, which we later confirmed was operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company,” the statement said.

LAMATA noted that it immediately contacted the victim’s family to express condolences, adding that the family demanded the arrest and prosecution of the driver.

According to the authority, “LAMATA assured the family that it was working closely with the concerned operator to ensure the identification, apprehension, and handover of the driver to the police for appropriate legal action.”

The agency disclosed that following a formal directive, the driver was presented by the operator on Monday, and handed over the same day to the police at the domestic wing police station of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of the company’s manager.

Describing the incident as a tragic loss, LAMATA said it remained committed to safety and accountability across all transport services regulated by the Lagos State Government.

“As a responsible agency of the Lagos State Government, LAMATA is deeply saddened by the loss of any life and remains committed to upholding safety and accountability across all regulated transport services,” the statement added.

The authority also urged pedestrians to make proper use of pedestrian bridges when crossing BRT corridors, warning that failure to do so continued to endanger lives.

LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to working with transport operators, security agencies and the public to prevent similar occurrences and improve commuter safety across Lagos.

No Eggs Scarcity In Lagos - Poultry Farmers

The Lagos State chapter  of the Poultry Association of Nigeria has debunked claims of egg scarcity in the state, reiterating the abundance of the produce.

The chapter Chairman, Mr Mojeed Iyiola, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Lagos.

Iyiola further reiterated the surplus of eggs in the state and at low price as against claims of its scarcity in certain parts of the state.

“I want to say there are eggs available in Lagos presently. There is no scarcity of eggs in Lagos.

“So in places where they are witnessing scarcity of eggs I don’t think it’s a natural scarcity. Probably they have paucity of funds and could not buy the products but there eggs available.

“We recently displayed crates of eggs virtually across the eight zones we have in Lagos from 31st December 2025 till the new year at ridiculously low prices.

“We sold the crates between N4,800 to N5,000 as against the usual farm gate price of N4,900 to N5,200 per crate just to ensure we did not experience egg glut,” the chairman said.

Iyiola also noted that there would be a further drop in the price of eggs and chicken come Easter, if the state government extends its intervention in the sector.

According to him, the probable reasons why some egg traders may not have the produce available for sale is that they may be owing their suppliers who probably refused to give them new stock.

“For now, there is no scarcity of eggs, and we have been selling at a reasonable price for a while now because we had an intervention from the Lagos state government and our agreement was to force the price down.

“Although the intervention has been stopped for now, the government is contemplating giving us more intervention so as to drop the price of poultry produced during the Easter period.

“If that is done, then we are going to have a subsidised rate for chicken as well as eggs during the Easter celebration,” Iyiola said.

Why We Demolished Structures At Makoko Waterfront - Lagos Government

The Lagos State Government has defended the ongoing demolition exercise in Makoko community, even as a planned protest against the action recorded a low turnout in the waterfront community.

Only a handful of youths gathered at the waterfront on Tuesday to protest the demolition.

The protesters, mostly youths, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Please hear our cry,” “Please maintain 100 metres,” “Protect our homes, save

our families,” and “Immediate stop of demolition beyond 100m,” among others.

Speaking on the development, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Mr. Gbolahan Oki, said those opposing the exercise were residents who

refused to vacate areas marked for demolition.

“There is no problem with Makoko,” Oki said. “The Makoko people have been one. We have been on this for the last five years. There have been a series of

engagements. We begged them, held meetings with them, and they agreed.

“The people making noise now are those stubborn boys who do not want to leave the place. What the law says is 100 metres from the power line.”

He said the government had acted in the interest of public safety, warning that residents would hold the state responsible if a power line fell into the

water.

“If any power line drops into the water, it is the government they will blame. And the government has been warning them,” he said.

Oki also questioned the condition of the waterfront, insisting that the demolition was necessary for environmental and urban planning reasons.

“Is that how the waterfront of any country looks? Even the NGO people coming to brainwash them — is that how their waterfronts look like?” he asked.

On whether the government was adhering to the agreed 100-metre setback from power lines, Oki said the actual safety requirement was wider.

“It is even 250 metres, so giving them 100 metres is free for all,” he said.

The state government explained that the demolition formed part of its urban regeneration programme aimed at achieving megacity status.

It noted that similar exercises had been carried out in areas such as Oworonshoki, Mile 12 and Eti-Osa, as part of efforts to enforce building regulations

and ensure compliance with urban planning laws across Lagos.

Motorcyclist, Passenger Die In Crash While Plying 'One-Way' At Epe

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has apprehended a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker driver who struck and killed a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.

Giwa said the incident occurred at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe–Ijebu Road, Epe.

According to him, preliminary security findings revealed that the commercial motorcyclist, who was conveying a male passenger, was unlawfully plying a prohibited route (one-way) when he was struck by the speeding tanker.

“This is a blatant contravention of existing traffic statutes.

“The violent impact proved fatal, resulting in the instantaneous death of both the rider and his passenger,” he said.

He added that LASTMA operatives had been promptly mobilised to the scene and had taken the tanker driver into custody, while the affected area was cordoned off to avert secondary mishaps and ensure public safety.

“Relevant security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, were duly notified in strict adherence to established emergency response protocols.

“Thereafter, the remains of the deceased motorcyclist and his passenger were transferred to officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Noforija Police Division.

“The apprehended tanker driver was also handed over to the police for thorough investigation and appropriate legal action,” he said.

Giwa noted that the tanker was evacuated from the carriageway, thereby facilitating the seamless flow of vehicular movement within the affected axis.

He admonished commercial motorcyclists and other road users to obey traffic regulations, particularly by avoiding driving against traffic and reckless struggles for right of way with heavier vehicles.

“This unfortunate loss of lives was entirely avoidable.

“Had the motorcyclist remained within his lawful lane and observed a moderate speed, this fatal incident would not have occurred,” he said.

Giwa reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s resolve to intensify traffic law enforcement while safeguarding lives and property across the state.

He urged all road users to cultivate responsible driving habits and maintain uncompromising adherence to traffic regulations.

Ajomagberin, who stated that the appointment was approved by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Olanrewaju Ibrahim Layode, during a scheduled meeting with the coordinators at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, added that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Islamic Matters, Hon. Ahmad Abdullahi Jebe, was also present at the meeting.

He urged the Schedule Officers to show utmost commitment to the assignment by ensuring that the pilgrims enjoy the comfort they deserve before and during the spiritual exercise. He stressed that the state government is deeply committed to providing pilgrims with an enabling and conducive environment to actualise their dreams of fulfilling their spiritual obligation and would therefore not condone any untoward or unlawful acts that could undermine this commitment.

Six Million Lagosians Living With Hypertension - Health Commissioner

A 2025 data from Lagos State Ministry of Health has shown that an estimated six million residents of the state are living with hypertension, with the majority unaware of their condition, says the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi.

Abayomi disclosed this on Tuesday during a leadership dialogue organised by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board in collaboration with development partners, including Nigeria Health Watch, aimed at strengthening the state’s primary healthcare system.

The dialogue brought together senior government officials, health administrators and local government leaders to review the state of primary healthcare delivery in Lagos and identify gaps requiring urgent attention.

Speaking on the burden of non-communicable diseases, the commissioner said Lagos was facing a growing public health challenge from hypertension, diabetes and obesity, which he described as “silent killers” responsible for a rising number of preventable complications in hospitals across the state.

According to him, 20 per cent of Lagosians are currently living with hypertension, translating to about six million people out of the state’s estimated population of 30 million.

He noted that the danger was compounded by the fact that most affected residents were unaware of their health status.

Abayomi said available data indicated that about 70 per cent of Lagosians with hypertension did not know they were hypertensive, amounting to roughly 4.2 million people living with the condition without diagnosis or treatment.

He explained that this lack of awareness was a major reason hypertension continued to cause severe health outcomes such as heart failure, kidney failure and stroke.

The commissioner stressed that hypertension and diabetes often progress without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred, making routine screening and early detection critical.

He said many of the complications overwhelming secondary and tertiary hospitals could be prevented if residents accessed regular primary healthcare checks.

According to him, simple interventions such as routine blood pressure measurement, blood sugar testing, weight monitoring, and lifestyle counselling could significantly reduce the burden of these diseases if delivered effectively through functional primary healthcare centres (PHCs).

Abayomi linked the hypertension challenge to broader weaknesses in the primary healthcare system, noting that many Lagosians bypass PHCs and seek care directly from private hospitals or informal providers, such as patent medicine vendors and community pharmacies.

He said this pattern undermined early detection and continuity of care, particularly for chronic conditions requiring long-term monitoring and follow-up.

Beyond non-communicable diseases, the commissioner also highlighted the scale of child malnutrition in the state, calling it one of the most alarming health indicators.

He said current data showed that four out of every 10 children in Lagos were suffering from some form of malnutrition, underscoring the urgent need for stronger preventive and nutritional interventions at the community level.

He described malnutrition as a key contributor to poor child health outcomes, weakened immunity and increased vulnerability to disease.

The leadership dialogue, organised by the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board with support from partners such as Nigeria Health Watch, focused on aligning policy, financing and service delivery at the grassroots.

Participants discussed the need for stronger collaboration between state agencies, local governments and community structures to ensure that PHCs are adequately equipped to deliver preventive, promotive and basic curative services.

Members Of NAPWPd Draw Battle Line With Their Chairman, Adeniyi Rotimi, Over Unconstitutional Tenure Elongation: Threaten to drag him to EFCC for lack of financial accountability

An imminent implosion is looming before the Lagos state chapter of the National Association of Persons With Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD) as some concerned members of the association have confronted their chairman, Mr Adeniyi Rotimi, whom they accuse of “unconstitutional and illegal tenure elongation” amidst other allegations, including high-handedness and lack of financial accountability. This was contained in a petition written against the chairman in which they alleged that he has refused to conduct an election for the state chapter almost one year after the end of his tenure which they said expired February 2025.
“We, the concerned members of the National Association of Persons With Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD) Lagos State Chapter, bring to your attention serious allegations of misconduct and term overstay against our State Chairman, Adeniyi Rotimi”, the petition read in parts.
Mr Rotimi was also accused of high-handedness, threatening anyone that spoke against the tenure elongation. In addition, he was said to always make a joke of the issue when confronted with it and thus treat an otherwise serious issue with levity.
The petition further alleged that the chairman was running the association without accountability and that he rarely called for a general meeting of the state chapter except when he wanted to solicit funds from members.
Speaking with Lagos Today Extra!, one of these concerned members who is also the chairman of the Lagos Island local chapter of the association, Mr Adeniyi Gbadamosi, said members of the association had tried in vain to prevail on Mr Rotimi to conduct an election so that new exco members can take over the running of the association. He said the chairman was delaying to conduct the election because of his ambition to become the new South-west coordinator when eventually an election is held into that office by June 2026.
“Election into the office of the zonal coordinator for the South-west zone of the association is coming up by June this year and whoever is the Lagos state chairman will automatically become the coordinator of the zone. That is why Adeniyi Rotimi is delaying in conducting the Lagos state chapter election. He wants to continue to be chairman so that when the South-west election comes, he will automatically become the new coordinator of the zone. But it is wrong to do this through unconstitutional and illegal process,” Mr Adeniyi Gbadamosi said. He added that Mr Rotimi has an entitlement mentality to the position because he is a chairman imposed on the association as there was no real contest during the election that brought him in.
“It was Dare Dairo , the former GM of Lasoda, that imposed him on us. At the time, Dairo was the outgoing chairman and he manipulated the entire electioneering process and handpicked those that are now in the state executive committee. Everything was done in secrecy, even members who wanted to obtain forms for that election could not do that because the forms were hidden and only those handpicked by Dare Dairo had access to them.
“Everything that is happening now is being orchestrated from the background by Dare Dairo. And that’s because he wants to come back as the new state chairman of the association. The plan is to delay the whole process so that when eventually Adeniyi Rotimi goes to the zonal level, Dare Dairo will come back as the new chairman,” he stated.
Confirming the allegation of high-handedness, Adeniyi Gbadamosi said members were intimidated into silence because of the fear of being unjustly evicted out of the association’s platform, citing the case of one Otunba who was removed from the platform because of his opposition to the tenure elongation. He also told Lagos Today Extra! that Mr Rotimi was running the association without financial accountability, stressing that concerned members were considering dragging him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) so that he can account for all the funds that have come into the coffers of the association ever since he became chairman.
“In all the years that he has been chairman, Adeniyi Rotimi only called for a general meeting three times and this happens when he wants to solicit funds from members. We don’t know what happens to these funds. People like us will not just stand by and watch while our money is being misappropriated. We will certainly drag him to the EFCC so that he can account for all the money that has been coming into the association ever since he became chairman,” he further stated.
When contacted for his own side of the story, Mr Adeniyi Rotimi said he could not speak on the issue because he had to consult with his exco first before talking to the press. However, The state auditor of the association, Mr Ugo Cul, who spoke on his behalf, dismissed the allegation of high-handedness levelled against the chairman, saying it was fabricated from the “pit of hell”.
According to him, Mr Adeniyi Rotimi is the epitome of humility who can never threaten anyone let alone evicting them from the association’s platform simply because they have views that are contrary to his.
“Have you asked these people making these allegations whether they have exhausted the internal mechanism in the association before going to the press? Our association is a national association and if, at the state level, you feel uncomfortable about certain things, then the wise thing to do is approach the national body for redress,” he said.
Mr Ugo Cul could not however provide an answer as to why the chairman has refused to conduct an election almost a year after the expiration of his tenure. He said he could not answer because it was an issue within the purview of the national body. He could not also confirm if the national body of the association was in favour of the unconstitutional tenure elongation.
Lending his voice to the issue, the state Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association, Mr Ojo, said the allegation that the chairman was running the association without accountability was false and the handiwork of rumour mongers and mischief makers, stressing that Mr Rotimi had never embezzled the funds of the association. He also gave an insight as to why the state chapter had not conducted an election to usher in new exco members.
“It’s true that the tenure of the present administration expired last year. But it is not true that the chairman is not willing to conduct an election. We have not conducted the election because we have to wait for the local government chapters to conduct their own elections. As I speak with you, many of the local chapters are yet to conduct their elections. As soon as they do this, the state will conduct its own election,” he explained.
However, a source who is close to the exco but pleaded anonymity, faulted this explanation, insisting that tenure elongation was illegal and unconstitutional and therefore cannot be used in any guise.
“If for any reason, the state decides to defer its election to a later date, must it be through unconstitutional means? Why don’t they put in place a caretaker committee to take charge of the association pending the election of a new set of exco members?” the source asked, adding that, as at now, the present administration is unconstitutional and therefore whatever actions they take would be null and void and illegal.
Mr Adeniyi Gbadamosi also disagreed with the explanation given by the PRO, saying there was no part of the constitution that forbids state elections from holding until all local chapters have had their own elections.
In his own words: “It’s part of the delay tactics. There is no part of our constitution that says all local government chapters must conduct their elections before the state can conduct its own.”
Meanwhile, Mr Ugo Cul, the state auditor of the association became visibly angry when he learnt that Lagos Today Extra!’s correspondent spoke with Mr Ojo, the state PRO,, asking why the correspondent should speak with the PRO when he had already told the publication that the exco would not provide an answer to the question of why the chairman was delaying in conducting a state election for the chapter.
“I already told you that we will not tell you the reason for the delay in conducting the election because it is an issue with the national body. So, why did you go and speak with the PRO?” he asked. But when he was reminded that the PRO was the one constitutionally vested with the task of providing information to the public and not the auditor, he did not make further responses.
Comrade Adeyemi, another member of the association who spoke to Lagos Today Extra!, said what majority of the members want is for the state to conduct an election so that a new exco can come onboard. “Let them conduct the election so that everything can go back to normal. Majority of us want the election to hold as soon as possible,” he said.
In the midst of all this, a general meeting has been hurriedly slated for January 17 and most people believe this was going to be a make-it-all or break-it-all meeting as issues bordering on the tenure elongation will top the agenda for discussion that day. For now, concerned members of the association do not believe the January 17 meeting will produce any positive outcome, seeing it as a plan hurriedly put in place to brainwash them into playing along with Mr Rotimi in the tenure elongation.
As events unfold, the question on the lips of most observers is: Will the chairman listen to the voice of these concerned members and avert what many believe is an imminent implosion in the association or will he insist on holding onto that position? Events to come will determine where the tide swings to. Lagos Today Extra! will keep you posted.

How God Saved Me From The Pains Of Miscarriage Evacuation In 2013 - Actress Yewande Adekoya

Actress Yewande Adekoya has opened up about a miscarriage she experienced in 2013, saying the incident strengthened her faith in God.

In a video posted on Instagram, Adekoya recounted how she was rushed to the hospital with severe bleeding during her first pregnancy, losing the baby, and being told an evacuation procedure was needed.

“A few years ago, I remember it was 2013. I was pregnant at the time. After some months, I started to bleed, so I was rushed to the hospital. I knew I was miscarrying, like I was about losing the baby.

“They told me the baby had died and we needed to do an evacuation. I had been told that evacuation was very painful. I was so sad that I’d lose my baby. I was in serious pain. I cried all through the night,” Adekoya said.

She explained that the fear of the procedure compounded her emotional distress, especially as it was her first pregnancy.

“I was also afraid of the evacuation process that was going to be done for me in the morning. If this whole miscarriage process is this painful, how would evacuation be?” she asked.

Adekoya described the experience as “devastating” and “terrifying,” but shared a vivid dream where a man in white, resembling a doctor, performed the procedure.

“As soon as I sat up in bed, I felt a heavy push in my bowel. I felt like something was coming through,” she narrated.

According to her, she woke up, and the miscarriage completed itself without medical intervention.

“As soon as I got into the bathroom and stood at the centre of the bathroom, the baby that died fell to the ground. Blood, formation, whatever. It fell to the ground.

“When the doctors came, they did a scan, and they said there would be no need for an evacuation because the baby was no longer there. It had come out itself, and I was fine to go home,” Adekoya stated.

Reflecting on the experience, Adekoya said it shaped her conviction about God’s presence in her life, stating, “I cannot come out and say there is no God because I have experienced a lot of things that I know are not ordinary.”

Man Remanded Over N60 Million Visa Scam

Officers of the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday arraigned a man, Israel Onen, before the Federal High Court in Lagos over an alleged visa racketeering scheme involving N60m.

Onen was docked before Justice Ibrahim Kala on four counts bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, fraud, and stealing, preferred against him by the police in the charge marked FHC/L/1203C/2025.

During the arraignment, the prosecutor told the court that the defendant conspired with others, now at large, between 2024 and 2025 to defraud the complainant, Akinola Ayodele Emmanuel.

He alleged that Onen “fraudulently obtained the sum of N60m under the pretence of procuring Ireland and Schengen countries’ visas” for the complainant’s clients.

“The visas were never procured, and the money was not returned,” the prosecutor added.

The police further alleged that the defendant’s actions contravened provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, and the Criminal Code.

When the charges were read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Following the plea, the prosecutor asked the court for a trial date and urged that the defendant be remanded in police custody.

“We are asking that the defendant be remanded in the custody of Zone 2 Command because there are several complaints against him,” the prosecutor said.

However, defence counsel O. Ogu opposed the application and urged the court to grant the defendant bail.

“We have filed and served our bail application on the prosecution, and we pray the court to admit the defendant to bail on liberal terms,” he told the court.

In his ruling, Justice Kala granted the defendant bail in the sum of N60m with one surety in like sum.

The judge ordered that “the surety must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 13 or a landed property owner with property valued at N60m.”

Justice Kala further directed that the defendant and his surety must each deposit two passport photographs, their National Identification Numbers, Bank Verification Numbers, bank account details, and phone numbers used for receiving alerts.

“The court registrar and the prosecutor are to participate in the verification of the bail conditions,” the judge ruled.

He adjourned the case to February 12, 2026, for trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

Sanwo-Olu Mourns The Passage Of Oba Akran Of Badagry

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has mourned the passage of Oba of Badagry (Paramount Ruler of Badagry Kingdom) and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Babatunde Akran, the Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, who joined his ancestors at the age of 89.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Monday, described the departure of Oba Akran as a great loss not only to the people of Badagry but also to Lagos and Nigeria at large, given his remarkable impact as a respected monarch.

He said the revered king, who was on the throne for nearly 49 years, is a traditional ruler known for his wisdom, cultural preservation, and advocacy for Badagry’s development, adding that he rendered selfless service to the people and left behind a legacy of unity, tradition, uplifting and modern development.

He said: “On behalf of my wife, the government and people of Lagos, I commiserate with the people of Badagry, the deceased’s family, friends, associates and traditional institutions on the transition of the paramount ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

“The death of Oba Akran is a great loss to the people of the ancient town of Badagry, and he will be greatly missed. He was a respected journalist. As a traditional ruler, he made a positive impact during his lifetime and contributed meaningfully to the growth and development of his community, Lagos State, and Nigeria.

“Oba Akran, as a first-class traditional ruler, left a lasting legacy that the people of Badagry Kingdom will continue to cherish. He served as the custodian of Badagry’s traditions, customs, and cultural heritage for nearly 49 years. He was a stabilising force, known for uniting diverse interests within his kingdom, and he promoted Badagry’s historical sites and cultural festivals nationally and internationally, fostering tourism and cultural exchange.

“He also used his position to attract growth and development to the ancient town. I urge his family, friends, subjects and associates, as well as the entire people of Badagry, whose interests the departed traditional ruler represented and worked tirelessly for during his lifetime, to work towards immortalising him.

“I pray that Almighty God be pleased with the soul of the late monarch and grant the royal family and the people of the Badagry kingdom and Lagos State the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Sanwo-Olu Charges The Church To Continually Pray For The Military

The church has a duty to continue to pray for peace, for wisdom in leadership, and for members of the armed forces who protect the citizens. This submission was made by Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu,

Speaking on Sunday at the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and remembrance thanksgiving at Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Sanwo-Olu, who commended members of the armed forces for their service and sacrifice, noted that the remembrance challenges every Nigerian to promote unity, be responsible, and respect one another.

Sanwo-Olu said this is important because a nation divided weakens its defenders, and a nation united strengthens its peace.

“Every day we wake up to normal routines, travel freely, worship openly, and live without fear; someone somewhere is standing guard. Someone is watching the night so others can sleep. Someone is carrying the weight of responsibility so the nation can breathe.

“We give thanks to God for preserving our nation through another year. We give thanks for the lives of those who serve in uniform: soldiers, sailors, airmen, and officers who operate in difficult terrain, under pressure, often in danger of death, so that others may live in safety. Their duty goes beyond profession; it is a calling rooted in discipline, courage, and service.

“Today we remember the fallen brave sons and daughters who answered the call of duty and did not return. Their names may not always be spoken, but their sacrifice is written into the story of our nation. Scripture reminds us in the gospel of John 15:13 that ‘greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for others.’ That truth lives in the legacy of our fallen heroes.

“To the families they left behind—spouses, children, parents—your sacrifice is equally profound. You carried the weight of absence, uncertainty, and loss with dignity. The nation owes you more than words; it owes you honour, care, and enduring support. We stand with you, and we commit never to forget.

“Over the years, our Armed Forces have continued to evolve in professionalism, training, coordination, and resilience. They have adapted to complex security challenges, supported internal peace efforts, assisted in disaster response, protected critical infrastructure, and contributed to regional stability. Their role extends beyond combat; it includes humanitarian support, civil engagement, and national unity.

“This period of remembrance challenges us as citizens to unity, responsibility, and respect for one another. A nation divided weakens its defenders. A nation united strengthens its peace. The church also has a duty in this journey. We must continue to pray for peace, for wisdom in leadership, and for those who protect us.

“To our veterans, we honour your years of service. You laid foundations that others now build upon. Your experience, discipline, and example remain valuable to our society. A grateful nation does not discard its veterans; it learns from them and supports them.

“As we bow our heads in prayer, may God grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed. May He comfort their families. May He protect our Armed Forces and bless them with wisdom and courage, and may He grant our nation peace within and outside its borders,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

Medical Negligence: Chimamanda's Family Heads To Court Over Her Son's Death

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie  is reportedly heading for the court over her son’s death even as the Lagos state government has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the boy’s death. Her family is accusing Euracare Hospital, in Lagos, of negligence over the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died on Wednesday following a short illness, leaving the family devastated.

Now, the family allege there was a litany of failures at Euracare Hospital that led to the toddler's death, including being denied oxygen and being given too much sedation, causing a cardiac arrest.

The hospital expressed its "deepest sympathies" over the loss of the child but denied improper care, which it said had been in line with international standards.

It added that Nkanu had arrived at the hospital "critically ill" and that an investigation into the death was now under way.

Adichie's sister-in-law, Dr Anthea Nwandu, made a series of allegations about the hospital in an interview with Arise TV on Saturday.

In it, she said the medical director of Euracare had told Adichie her son "had received too much sedation", which subsequently caused him to suffer a cardiac arrest.

Dr Nwandu also accused medical staff of leaving the child unattended, denying him oxygen and transporting him in a manner that was "not according to standard practice".

She alleged Nkanu suffered a brain injury due to lack of oxygen.

Similar accusations concerning Nkanu's care were made in a private message from Adichie that was leaked online.

Her spokeswoman Omawumi Ogbe told the BBC that the message had originally been shared within "a close circle of family and friends", and "was not for public consumption".

Ms Ogbe continued: "While we are saddened that such a deeply personal account of grief and trauma was leaked, the details therein highlight the devastating clinical failures the family is now forced to confront.

"We hope that the substance of that message, detailing the gross medical negligence that led to this tragedy remains the central focus even as we look forward to the truth and accountability."

Nkanu was one of twin boys Adichie shared with her husband, Dr Ivara Esege.

Responding to the allegations, Euracare Hospital acknowledged the "profound and unimaginable loss" the family was experiencing, but said in a statement on Saturday that "reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies".

It said Nkanu, who was critically ill, had been referred to the hospital after receiving treatment from two paediatric centres, and that upon arrival staff "immediately provided care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including the administration of sedation".

It continued: "In the course of his care, we worked collaboratively with external medical teams as recommended by his family and ensured that all necessary clinical support was provided."

However, "despite these concerted efforts", the boy died less than 24 hours after arriving at the hospital, it added.

A "detailed investigation" was under way, Euracare said, adding that it remained "committed to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes".

Adichie, 48, had her first child, a daughter, in 2016. Her twin boys were born using a surrogate in 2024.

Responding to the allegations concerning Nkanu, an adviser to the Lagos State government said it "places the highest value on human life and maintains zero tolerance for medical negligence or unprofessional conduct".

Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on health matters, confirmed the state's health watchdog had commenced a "thorough, independent and transparent" investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

"Any individual or institution found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct, or regulatory violations will face the full wrath of the law," Dr Ogunyemi said.

She urged members of the public to avoid speculation over the death while the official investigation was ongoing.

Lagos Government Orders Probe Into The Death Of Chimamanda's Son

The Lagos State Government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of medical negligence surrounding the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who reportedly died at a private hospital in Lagos.

The toddler, one of Adichie’s twin sons, was said to have passed away on January 6 after a brief illness.

In a statement released on Saturday and signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, the state government said it had been officially informed of the “deeply distressing” account shared by the author regarding the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.

The government expressed condolences to Adichie and her family, describing the loss of a child as a devastating tragedy.

“The Lagos State Government places the highest premium on human life and maintains zero tolerance for medical negligence or unprofessional conduct in any health facility operating within the state,” the statement said.

According to the statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA, to immediately launch a thorough, independent and transparent investigation into the incident to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the child’s death.

“In line with this directive, HEFAMAA has commenced investigation and has already visited the facility involved as part of the ongoing inquiry,” the statement noted.

The government said the agency would conduct an extensive review of all allegations, medical records and reports connected to the case.

It added that HEFAMAA would work closely with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a credible and professionally guided investigation.

“The investigation will examine issues including adherence to clinical protocols, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved,” the statement said.

The government assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made public once concluded, in line with its commitment to transparency and accountability.

“Any individual or institution found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct or regulatory violations will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

The Lagos State Government urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the health, safety and rights of all residents and strengthening oversight of medical practice across the state.
