The political climate in Nigeria is becoming increasingly volatile as music promoter, Ijoba Danku, has alleged that he was assaulted in Lagos, claiming the attack was linked to his open support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Danku,
who is known in Nigeria’s street-hop music scene for promoting emerging
artistes, said the incident occurred on Friday around Illeshu, near the popular
New Afrika Shrine.
Speaking
from his hospital bed in a video shared on social media, he rejected claims
that the attack was a random robbery or street altercation, insisting it was
politically motivated.
“I was
attacked yesterday on the streets of Illeshu by some boys just because I am
supporting APC, Asiwaju 2027,” he said, referring to Tinubu’s anticipated bid
for a second term.
“They
wounded me and damaged my car.”
As of
the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to issue an official
statement on the incident, and the circumstances surrounding the attack remain
unclear.
Reports indicate
instances of targeted harassment, physical violence, and intimidation against
individuals and groups supporting President Bola Tinubu in specific political
hotspots. Supporters, such as political campaigners and grassroots organizers,
have reported being beaten and harassed.
It would be recalled
that the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT) in Ondo State sometime ago expressed
strong concerns over sponsored attacks and harassment targeted at its members
and activities, which it believed were part of a broader attempt to stifle
independent support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the state. The GMT
accused "faceless individuals" of destroying campaign billboards
promoting President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election along the Airport Road and
Oba-Ile corridor in Akure.
